Dems Warn in Multiple States: We’ll Know If You Don’t Vote, and So Will Your Neighbors

Constituents in Pennsylvania, New York, Missouri receive warnings

Individuals in at least three states have received literature from Democratic campaigns, organizations, or state parties warning that their voter records are public information. In one of those states, residents received documents that reveal if their immediate neighbors have voted in past elections. The language used on all three of the documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show that a unified theme of "who you vote for is private, but whether or not you vote is public record" has been used throughout in an apparent attempt to push voters to the polls.

Pennsylvania

The Free Beacon reported yesterday that Democratic candidate Scott Wallace, who is challenging incumbent Republican Brian Fitzpatrick in Pennsylvania's competitive first district, was using "Orwellian" door hangers that stated, "Remember, who you vote for is private, but whether or not you vote is public record. We can't wait to see that you voted on November 6!"

Wallace's campaign never returned a request for comment on the door hangers.

New York

Following publication of Wallace's campaign literature, an individual from Syracuse, N.Y., sent the Free Beacon a similar document from a group called the Center for Voter Information, a self-described "unbiased" organization that provides information about candidates. The document, however, also contains information on whether or not their neighbors have voted in past elections. "Public records indicate that you are eligible to vote in 2018," the document reads. "Who you vote for is private, but whether or not you vote is public record." [Emphasis in original] "We're sending this mailing to you and your neighbors to share who does and does not vote in an effort to promote election participation," it continues. "While we have hidden the name and street number of your neighbors to protect their privacy, these are their true voting records." "We will be reviewing these records after the election to determine whether or not you joined your neighbors in voting," it says. "We may call you to ask about your voting experience and will update this chart for the next election. If you do not vote this year, while we will be disappointed, we'll be interested to hear why not."

The message is signed by Lionel Dripps, a Washington, D.C.-based political consultant who is the managing director for program and digital for the Voter Participation Center, the 501(c)(3) arm of the Center for Voter Information, which is the 501(c)(4) arm. Dripps previously worked as the executive director for the Democratic Senate Campaign Fund and as a regional director for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.

Ellison Hit Again for Domestic Violence Allegations

Minnesota voters heading to the polls on Tuesday will be reminded of domestic abuse allegations against Democratic attorney general nominee Keith Ellison. A new statewide ad highlights charges that Ellison physically and verbally abused women. The issue has dogged the congressman throughout his bid to become Minnesota's next attorney general.

Keith Ellison's former girlfriend says he repeatedly assaulted her—and forcibly dragged her off her bed by her ankles while screaming profanities," the ad says. "In 2006, another girlfriend accused Ellison of abuse, saying he ‘berated' and ‘pushed' her." The Ellison campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The candidate has denied the allegations.

The ad goes on to link domestic violence to the ability of women to fight back against their abusers, highlighting Ellison's support for gun control. It says the Democrat's position would "make Minnesotans less safe," adding that Ellison's "own patterns of abuse shouldn’t allow him to threaten our rights."

Ellison is the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the country, having narrowly lost a bid to lead the national party. The Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) has spent $100,000 on the race to bolster nominee Doug Wardlow. The latest round of ads will air through Tuesday's election. RAGA spokesman Zack Roday said Minnesota voters deserve to hear about Ellison's "radical" record on issues of public safety. "Every time it matters, Keith Ellison is on the wrong side of public safety issues: cop killers over law enforcement, criminals over children, sex offenders over victims," Roday said in an email. "Keith Ellison’s extreme views and personal shortcoming are disqualifying; he is a dangerous choice for attorney general."

Minnesota is among the most closely watched states in the country heading into the midterm elections with four congressional districts considered toss-ups or on the verge of flipping against the incumbent heading into Tuesday. Democrats have enjoyed steady polling advantages in statewide races for Senate and governor. The attorney general's race, however, has been seen as a pick-up opportunity for Republicans. The candidates were even in September before Wardlow opened a 7-point lead in October, according to statewide polling, even as Ellison held a nearly $100,000 edge in fundraising.

Pelosi Says She’s Democrat Best Fit for Speaker: ‘I’m Really Good at What I Do’

Minority leader on letting Hoyer be House speaker for a week: 'That can't be a serious question'

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said in a new interview that she is best fit to be the next speaker of the House if Democrats win a majority in the 2018 midterm elections on Tuesday, suggesting that none of her Democratic colleagues should get to serve in the position while she is in Congress. Pelosi spoke to HuffPost about her 31 years in the House and 17 years in Democratic leadership, highlighting her confidence in the Democrats regaining control of the House. "I know the territory," she said. "And I'm really good at what I do."

espite Pelosi's experience, many House Democrats and Democratic congressional candidates have said that they would vote against Pelosi for speaker if their party retakes the chamber. Some have said Pelosi, 78, is too old for the position. "It is sexist," Pelosi told HuffPost. "But if there's misogyny, there's also a big upside in women. I feel confident about women, and many men, who say ‘My daughter can now do this and that and this because of you.' I don't spend too much time thinking about it … What is important to me in all of this is that women just ignore it."

While Pelosi said she is ready to foster generational change in the House, she would not offer specifics or any names of Democrats who she sees as potential new leaders in the Democratic Party. "I have for a long time tried to have a path for other people to take over," she said. "They have to go out there to get a following. They have to show their legislative chops. There are any number of people who could do that."

By indicating that it is time for a generational change, Pelosi effectively disqualified her top two colleagues in House Democratic leadership—Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.) and Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn (S.C.), both of whom are in their late 70s—from becoming speaker. HuffPost suggested that Pelosi let Hoyer be speaker for a week, "just to experience the glory" after being her deputy for years. "What would be the purpose?" Pelosi responded with a confused laugh. "That can't be a serious question." HuffPost followed up by asking whether the answer was a "no" for Hoyer. "For anybody," Pelosi said.

In August, the editorial board of one of the largest newspapers in Pelosi's home state of California, the Sacramento Bee, called on Pelosi to "put her party and her country ahead of her personal ambition and declare that she will not seek the speakership again" after the midterm elections. That same month, Clyburn said that he would purse the speakership if Democrats take control of the House and Pelosi cannot whip the votes needed to be elected to the position.
