Guam elects first female governor, a pick up for Democrats

Voters in Guam elected the U.S. territory’s first female governor Tuesday, and also flipped the seat from Republican to Democrat. Lou Leon Guerrero and her running mate Josh Tenorio took 50.7 percent of the vote from 67 precincts, according to Kuam News, beating Republican duo Ray Tenorio and Tony Ada, who had 26 percent of votes. Write-in votes took 22 percent of the vote. Leon Guerrero currently serves as the president of the Bank of Guam.

Republican Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo has served in office since 2011. Republicans have held the seat for the last 16 years. Guam residents began electing a governor in 1970. Before that, the territory’s governor was federally appointed.

The governor's seat in Guam is one of several that are up for grabs in the 2018 midterm elections. Republicans are expected to lose governors seats on net across the country, as a few are widely expected to go to Democrats, and Republicans have far more in tossup races compared to Democrats.
