ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY

On September 7, 1776, the first use of a submarine in warfare occurs when an American submersible craft, called Turtle, unsuccessfully tries to attach a time bomb to a British ship in New York Harbor during the Revolutionary War. The 8-foot-long wooden craft is hand powered. The bomb cannot be secured because the pilotโ€™s boring tools are unable to penetrate a layer of the British shipโ€™s iron sheathing.
