Let's look at historical data

The vast majority of Presidents lose their respective Houses, and sometimes even Senate seats, after the first midterm. Trump managed to grow the Senate while losing some in the house. Looking at the numbers of past elections, Trump didn't do badly.

The 'losing' side after the Presidential election rallies their base to retake seats hoping for a majority, forcing the President to be a lame duck, or at least a split Congress (Like we have now) making law passing difficult for the next 2 years.
