Indicted Texas Border Area Judge Wins Appellate Court Election

McALLEN, Texas — A Texas judge who resigned this year after being accused of taking bribes won his bid for a higher court. The judge ran as a Democrat.

Rodolfo “Rudy” Delgado, the former judge for the 93rd State District Court, is currently on bond awaiting trial for federal bribery charges after FBI agents arrested him in February. Prior to his collar, Delgado filed paperwork to run as a Democrat for Justice of the 13th Court of Appeals-Place 4.

Despite the high-profile indictment, Delgado cruised to victory, according results posted by the Hidalgo County Elections Department. In his home county, Delgado earned slightly more than 63 percent of the vote against Republican Jaime Tijerina. Hidalgo County is the most populous of the 20 that make up the judicial district. In the overall race, Delgado won with slightly more than 50 percent of the votes counted.

Prior to the election, Delgado publicly claimed that he would not be campaigning. However, according to Dave Hendricks from the Progress Times, he spent $22,000 from political accounts. The expenses include a new iPad, steak dinners, and legal fees for representation before the Texas Ethics Commission.

The case against Delgado began in 2016 when a South Texas attorney-turned-informant claimed that since 2008, he paid Delgado cash bribes in exchange for “favorable treatment” in court–reportedly while wearing a “wire” in some cases. In two examples, the judge released defendants on bond upon receipt of cash offerings, court documents claim.

Swedish police to recruit migrant police officers from crime-ridden ‘no-go area’

The Swedish police have serious plans to recruit police officers from Rinkeby, a crime-ridden migrant suburb in Stockholm.

To encourage more migrant police officers, the police have planned a presentation in Rinkeby for potential candidates today.

News outlet Fria Tiders says the local police authority emphasises the importance of a “mixed background” for future police officers in the country.

“It is important that more people seek police training and that those seeking and then becoming policemen have a mixed background,” says Niclas Andersson, Head of Rinkeby‘s local police.

“We need diversity within the police. Now, we invite you to tell us more and to answer questions to get more people from our target areas”, he adds.

The Sweden police force needs 10,000 new officers by 2024 to increase its capacity to 40,000.

“The increase in the number of police officers should primarily be solved by training more recruits. This means that the student capacity has been increased,” Andersson says.

Rinkeby in Stockholm is a notorious no-go area and has even be called a ‘war zone’ by a Swedish Chief Prosecutor. In August this year a new police station was attacked and set on fire by ‘masked men’.

Border Patrol Apprehends 31 in Multiple Texas Human Smuggling Events

Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended 31 illegal immigrants in four separate smuggling incidents.

Agents assigned to the Hebbronville Station on Monday observed a white pickup truck in an area known for human smuggling. As the agents approached the vehicle, it quickly came to a stop and a large number of people bailed out and fled into the brush, according to Laredo Sector Border Patrol officials.

The agents carried out a search of the area and recovered 11 illegal immigrants, officials stated. Following an immigration interview, the agents learned the migrant group included five Mexican nationals and six Guatemalans. One unaccompanied minor was also found.

The agents were unable to locate the driver, but seized the vehicle.

One day earlier, Zapata Station agents received a request for assistance from a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who had a vehicle he planned to stop for suspicious activity. As the agents arrived on the scene, the vehicle, a 2006 Chrysler 300, failed to yield, leading the trooper and agents on a vehicle pursuit, officials stated. When it finally stopped, the driver and the passengers attempted to flee into the nearby brush.

The agents carried out a search and found the driver, a U.S. citizen, and six illegal immigrants. The agents arrested the driver and arranged for the migrants to be transported to a local hospital for evaluation. They will be processed for immigration violations after being medically cleared, officials reported.

Hebbronville Station agents apprehended seven more migrants on November 4 after receiving a tip about “illicit activity” on a ranch near Bruni, Texas. The agents arrived on the scene and began tracking footprints. The agents caught up with the group of seven and took them into custody.

Officials determined one was the smuggler, a U.S. citizen. Agents identified the other six from Mexico and Ecuador, officials reported.

Finally, on November 2, agents assigned to the Interstate 35 checkpoint observed a tractor-trailer approaching. The agents referred the driver to a secondary inspection station. Agents found six migrants from Brazil and Guatemala.

Agents arrested the driver on suspected human smuggling charges and placed the six illegal aliens in custody. They will be processed for immigration violations. Officials reportedly seized the tractor-trailer.

UN: More than 200 mass graves discovered in Iraq

At least 200 mass graves containing up to 12,000 victims have been discovered in Iraq, a UN report has revealed, as the country struggles to emerge from a four year battle with Daesh militants.

The UN Human Rights Office and the UN Assistance Mission documented the existence of 202 mass grave sites in the northern and western Iraqi governorates, including 95 in Ninevah, 37 in Kirkuk, 36 in Salah Al-Din and 24 in Anbar.

The number of dead in the graves varies widely, with some holding just eight corpses, while one in the Khasfa sinkhole south of Mosul is believed to hold some 4,000. Exact numbers are difficult to establish; only 28 mass graves have been excavated so far, with just 1,258 bodies exhumed.

“Evidence gathered from these sites will be central to ensuring credible investigations, prosecutions and convictions in accordance with international due process standards,” the report states.

“Meaningful truth and justice requires the appropriate preservation, excavation and exhumation of mass grave sites and the identification of the remains of the many victims and their return to the families.”

The murders are believed to have been committed by Daesh militants, who have lost swathes of territory to the Iraqi army and international coalition forces in the country. The United Nations has said previously that almost 33,000 civilians were killed by the group in Iraq, with more than 55,000 injured.

The report noted the importance of establishing the identity of the victims to aid the recovery process for their families.

“[Daesh’s] horrific crimes in Iraq have left the headlines but the trauma of the victims’ families endures, with thousands of women, men and children still unaccounted for,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said.

These graves contain the remains of those mercilessly killed for not conforming to ISIL’s [Daesh] twisted ideology and rule, including ethnic and religious minorities. Their families have the right to know what happened to their loved ones. Truth, justice and reparations are critical to ensuring a full reckoning for the atrocities committed by ISIL [Daesh].

The report urged the government to take a multidisciplinary approach to recovery operations, and for a public, centralised registry of missing persons as well as a federal Office of Missing Persons, to be created.

Iraq has established a government body to deal with issues related to the mass graves, but the directorate says it is underfunded and understaffed, and cannot adequately protect and investigate the sites which are still littered with unexploded ordinance.

The report also called on the international community to provide resources and technical support to the Iraqi authorities to aid in the process of exhuming the sites.
