Matthew G. Whitaker, the recently appointed acting Attorney General has replaced AG Jeff Sessions, who had just resigned per the President’s request. His White House counterpart, Gen. John F. Kelly has privately described him as the West Wing’s “eyes and ears” in a department the president has long considered at war with him. Freshly sworn in as acting Attorney General, Whitaker has served as what one White House aide called a “balm” on the relationship between the President and the Justice Department. He has frequently visited the Oval Office and is said to have an easy chemistry with President Trump. Whitaker’s a confident former college football player and United States attorney who has been considered before when Deputy AG Rosenstein’s future was uncertain at the Department of Justice. Mr. Whitaker would not have assumed control of the Mueller inquiry if he had replaced Mr. Rosenstein. However, in replacing AG Sessions, it seems that he will obviously take control of the special counsel. Administration officials had also considered Mr. Whitaker as a possible successor to Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel who plans to leave in the fall.
