NOTABLE RED LINE
In tweets and appearances on CNN, former federal prosecutor Matthew Whitaker has said that Special Counsel Robert Mueller crossed a “red line” by looking into Trump’s financial records.
Whitaker, who could now have direct oversight of Mueller’s investigation, suggested in a 2017 CNN segment that a future attorney general could curtail Mueller’s investigation by reducing the budget “so low that his investigations grinds to almost a halt.”
“Those same codes of special regulations govern the budget of the Special Counsel and that is well within the power of the Attorney General. So I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced with a recess appointment and that Attorney General doesn’t fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his budget so low that his investigation grinds to almost a halt,” Whitaker said.
