Republican Party lawyer Matt Whitaker was appointed acting United States attorney general on Wednesday, opening the door for President Donald Trump to fire the special counsel investigating his campaign’s relationship with Russia.
Shortly after the announcement of his promotion, The Hill reported that Whitaker will now oversee Mueller’s probe, taking the place of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Former U.S. Congressman Stephen E. Stockman was sentenced today to serve 120 months in prison and ordered to pay $1,014,718.51 in restitution, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for orchestrating a four-year scheme to defraud charitable donors of hundreds of thousands of dollars and secretly to funnel the proceeds to pay for personal expenses and to illegally finance his campaigns for public office.
He served as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 9th congressional district from 1995 to 1997 and for Texas's 36th congressional district from 2013 to 2015.
