She also describes the gun as a .40 caliber. No one says this. You can't tell when a gun is a .40. The round is slightly bigger than a 9mm and the frames are exactly the same. 40cal is an off caliber and not widely used, even today.
Even the most experienced firearm expert would struggle to identify a 40 vs 9mm. Under stress and direct fire it would be even harder
