Florida governor's race careens closer to recount
The governor’s race in Florida was within an eyelash of triggering a recount Thursday, potentially joining the races for U.S. Senate and agriculture commissioner in not being over any time soon.
Democrat Andrew Gillum was 0.52 percentage points behind Republican Ron DeSantis, a margin of just less than 43,000 votes. A margin within 0.5 points would trigger an automatic machine recount, though it would have to be approved by the Florida Secretary of State.
The race for U.S. Senate was within .01 percentage point of triggering a hand recount, with U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson trailing Gov. Rick Scott by 0.26 points, or less than 22,000 votes. A hand recount, a more thorough process than a machine recount, would happen if the race was within 0.25 points.
Nikki Fried, the Democratic candidate for agriculture commissioner, was likely headed to a hand recount with Republican Matt Caldwell, who she trailed by 0.06 points, a little more than 4,000 votes.
Gillum conceded to DeSantis on Tuesday night, and DeSantis was busy Wednesday announcing his transition staff. But unless Gillum formally declines a recount, it would go forward if approved — and his campaign staff did not look like it would turn down the opportunity.
“I’m told at least 20,000 votes are left to count” in Broward County,” Gillum advisor Kevin Cate said on Twitter.
Election officials in each of Florida’s 67 counties have until noon Saturday to report unofficial results to the state.
Broward County has been the scene of drama since the election, with the Nelson campaign holding off on conceding Tuesday night due to votes from seven precincts that had to be driven to elections centers and manually entered via thumb drives.
"I can't give you an exact number. I'm not sure. I'm really not sure," Broward Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes said when asked how many votes needed to be tabulated Wednesday night.
Of Broward ballots already counted, more than 24,000 people voted for a governor candidate but didn’t vote for a Senate candidate, according to county results released Wednesday.
The Senate race’s placement in the bottom left corner of the Broward ballot, away from the state races that got more votes, was speculated as a possible reason for the undervotes.
