Ex-NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman won't face criminal charges

Former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman won't face criminal charges related to allegations that he assaulted several women with whom he had been romantically linked. Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, who is the special prosecutor overseeing the investigation into the allegations, cited the statutes of limitations for the decision while also noting how she believes the women’s allegations. "I personally interviewed each of the women who cooperated with our investigation along with their attorneys," Singas said in a statement Thursday, according to media reports. "I believe the women who shared their experiences with our investigation team, however legal impediments, including statutes of limitations, preclude criminal prosecution."

In May, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam told the New Yorker on the record that Schneiderman hit them and choked them while they were in bed, against their will, forcing them to seek medical attention. The two women characterized his behavior as “assault” and said the violent behavior typically occurred after Schneiderman had been drinking. They also claimed that Schneiderman threatened to kill them if they cut ties with him, an accusation that Schneiderman’s spokesperson rejected.

The New Yorker also corroborated the accounts of several other women who accused Schneiderman of abuse but did not disclose their identities. "I recognize that District Attorney Singas' decision not to prosecute does not mean I have done nothing wrong. I accept full responsibility for my conduct in my relationships with my accusers, and for the impact it had on them," Schneiderman said in a statement through a spokesperson Thursday. "After spending time in a rehab facility, I am committed to a lifelong path of recovery and making amends to those I have harmed. I apologize for any and all pain that I have caused, and I apologize to the people of the State of New York for disappointing them after they put their trust in me." Schneiderman, a rising Democratic figure who claimed to be a supporter of the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct, resigned from his post in May following the New Yorker article.
