RNFag here. Re: RBG and her rib fractures. It is possible that since she broke three ribs that those ribs are next to one another on the same side of the chest. If two or more ribs are broken (and adjoin each other) AND the ribs are broken in more than one location it is called a FLAIL CHEST.

Flail chest injuries most commonly occur in automobile accidents (76%), the rest from falls. 1:13 people admitted to the hospital with fractured ribs are found to have a flail chest. The death rate from flail chest is 10-25%. Obviously the older you are, the worse the potential outcome.

Pneumonia as previously mentioned in another concern as well as the risk of DVT/PE due to immobility (because broken ribs hurt like hell and you don't want to move). RBG's broken ribs could be the end of her SCOTUS career.
