Information Picket: The Resettlement of Syria’s White Helmets in Canada

On Friday, November 9th, members of the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War will be holding an information picket outside the CBC offices during the James St. North “Art Crawl.”

This informational picket will challenge the CBC’s unrelentingly favourable coverage of the Syrian White Helmets, in particular their resettlement in Canada by the Trudeau government.

Unbeknownst to many, “White Helmets” routinely appear in public in Syria alongside the terrorist groups in which they are embedded, primarily Al Qaeda.

UBS Tells DOJ To Pound Sand Over Plea Deal For Manafort's Trump Tower Apartment

UBS has filed a document with the District Court of D.C. to block the Department of Justice's forfeiture of Paul Manafort's $3 million apartment at Trump Tower - arguing that the 1,500 square-foot, 43rd floor unit isn't his to relinquish per a September agreement with federal prosecutors.

Bloomberg reports that the former Trump campaign chairman gave up the condo as part of a plea arrangement regarding crimes he committed as a consultant for Ukraine's then-ruling government party.

Manafort purchased the apartment in 2006 with cash through a shell company, John Hannah LLC, for about $3.7 million, according to property records. In early 2015, he transferred the property from the shell company to himself. He then pledged the home as collateral on a $3 million loan from UBS Bank USA. The variable-rate mortgage required interest-only payments for the first 10 years, before coming due in May 2040. -Bloomberg

In their Nov. 2 court filing, UBS says that Manafort has defaulted on the $3 million mortgage, while Zillow lists the apartment with an estimated value of $2.9 million. Manafort owed nearly $110,000 in interest in fees as of Nov 1, while his interest rate this month was 4.125%.

UBS claims it didn't know that the property would be subject to forfeiture when the loan was made, and that their interest in the property is superior to Manafort's. The bank has asked a D.C. judge to block the transfer of the apartment to the government - one of several properties Manafort agreed to give up as part of his deal.

Palestinian Authority Agrees to Gaza Truce Between Hamas and Israel - Reports

Nevertheless, sources in the Palestinian Authority deny any changes in the president’s views after a meeting with Egyptian president Al-Sisi.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has persuaded Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to accept a truce agreement between Israel and the Hamas movement that controls the Gaza Strip, Ynet and Haaretz reported Thursday.

However, later that day, a senior Palestinian Authority official told the Jerusalem Post that he was unaware of Abbas accepting any such agreement.

For months, Abbas opposed the negotiation of a ceasefire agreement because he was left out of the talks, Ynet reports. His concern was that if such an agreement was reached directly with Hamas, it would effectively cement Hamas's rule over the Strip for good, kicking the PA from the region. This would mean that the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which are now considered two parts of Palestine, would become de-facto two different states.

Last weekend, Abbas met with Sisi in Sharm El Sheikh. Following the meeting, Abbas reportedly agreed to the peace agreements in order to give Gazans some "breathing space," according to Al Hayat newspaper.

According to the paper, Sisi briefed Abbas on Egypt's efforts to achieve "calm" in the Gaza Strip and end the ongoing dispute between Hamas and the PA president's ruling Fatah faction that controls the West Bank.

The sources close to the talks cited by Ynet and the Jerusalem Post said the peace discussions will consist of two phases: the first will take two to three weeks, and the second will take six months.

The sources also said Israel has agreed to transfer a $90 million Qatari grant into Gaza to pay salaries to Hamas employees for six months, under the condition that the US will be responsible for the money transfer. In addition, Israel reportedly agreed to allow an increase of exports from Gaza — including fruits, vegetables, furniture and clothes — during the first stage of the peace period. This would be the first export increase from Gaza in many years, Ynet notes.

Among multiple issues challenging “democracies” around the world, the report adressed the role of SouthFront:

Russian information operations are expanding in the Middle East. The case of Syria is the most well-known, but it is not the only one. In January 2016, the “South Front: Analysis & Intelligence” website (southfront.org) was launched. It claimed to be a product of a team of experts and volunteers from the four corners of the Earth but it “looks more like a professional info-war project run or backed by the Russian military.”

The quote that SouthFront is “run or backed by the Russian military” can be traced back to the 2016 article entitled “An allegedly citizen-sourced project that looks more like a suspicious information operation“.

Unfortunately, the report’s evaluation of SouthFront is weakened by some factual gaps. For example, it is interesting how did the aurthors conclude that SouthFront was launched in January, 2016?
