The most high-profile new Democratic member of Congress is trying to figure out how to afford an apartment in Washington and trying to stretch funds from her restaurant job until January.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, shocked Washington by knocking off powerful Queens Rep. Joe Crowley. Now, as an incoming freshman lawmaker, the democratic socialist has other problems of her own.
The transition period between her election win Tuesday and her swearing-in in January is a problem, and she is no longer drawing a salary.
She told the New York Times that gap will be 'very unusual, because I can't really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before I'm a member of Congress,' she said.
Other elected House members draw pay, but she may have been referring to potential ethics problems of soliciting work after being elected as a member of Congress.
'So, how do I get an apartment?' she wondered. 'Those little things are very real.'
Ocasio-Cortes, who stressed her working class status and upbringing during her unlikely win, said she saved some funds before leaving her restaurant job. But that might not cut it Washington D.C.'s hot real estate and high rent market, which doesn't quite rival New York's but has led some lawmakers to sleep in their offices or even bunk in group houses

The Queen 'had words' with Prince Harry over his 'difficult' bride Meghan Markle's preferred choice of wedding tiara, it was claimed today.
The groom allegedly told staff: 'What Meghan wants, Meghan gets' before they married in the grounds of Windsor Castle in May, according to a book by Robert Jobson.
The Duchess was said to have had her 'heart set' on a tiara containing emeralds but was told she couldn't wear it because the green stones might have come from Russia, The Sun reports.
A royal insider told the newspaper that the Queen stepped in and told Harry: 'She gets what tiara she's given by me.'
The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage', the source alleged.
Meghan had her heart set on this tiara with emeralds and Prince Harry hit the roof when they were told it was impossible for her to wear it,' the source told The Sun.
The provenance of the tiara couldn't be established, the source said, adding that there were concerns it originally came from Russia.
Meghan ended up wearing Queen Mary's diamond and platinum bandeau tiara on her wedding day.
She picked the tiara from the Queen's collection during a visit to Buckingham Palace with Prince Harry.
And she gave no hint that it wasn't her first choice.
She described her visit to see the Queen and choose a headpiece for her wedding as 'an incredibly surreal day'.
Meghan and Prince Harry recorded their memories of the wedding for an audio commentary that is part of the new 'Relive the Royal Wedding' exhibition at Windsor Castle, which opened last month.
Speaking about the tiara she wore, Meghan said: 'When it came to the tiara on the day, I was very fortunate to be able to choose this gorgeous art deco style bandeau tiara.
'Harry and I had gone to Buckingham Palace to meet with Her Majesty The Queen to select one of the options that were there, which was an incredibly surreal day as you can imagine.
'And that was the one that, I think, as we tried them on, stood out.'
