Elias is widely considered one of the most powerful attorneys associated with the Democratic Party. He is chair of the Political Law Group at the Perkins Coie law firm. Elias represented Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign as well as the Democratic National Committee. He was brought in by Nelson’s campaign to oversee official recount efforts.

A lawyer named Marc Elias made a name in the press for battling against voter IDs and now Elias takes center stage, dragging along his ties to Hillary Clinton and her campaign, as he is being investigated for voter fraud.

Elias, an attorney at Perkins Coie, is involved with the Ohio Organizing Collaborative beginning in May when he filed a lawsuit on its behalf to challenge the state’s voter identification laws. Now the group is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal investigation after a local board of elections alleged that 25 to 30 of the voter-registration applications that the group submitted appeared to be fraudulent.

What do you consider to have been your big break?

I had the honor of serving as general counsel to John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004. I had worked closely with Senate campaigns prior to this, but this was my first experience serving as the lead counsel on a presidential campaign and personally handling everything that requires.

Even though we lost, it was a great experience with a tight-knit group of people, and was certainly a milestone both personally and in my legal career.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I am very proud of having successfully managed the legal operations of Senator Al Franken’s recount in his 2008 Senatorial campaign. It was a long, hard fight over eight months. We worked tirelessly to ensure that every vote cast was correctly counted. Ultimately we were successful.  I have been involved in eight state-wide recounts and have been successful in all of them. This is a unique area of the law and politics to have built an expertise in and I am proud to have done so.
