Trump: I am sending lawyers to Florida to 'expose the fraud'
President Trump said Friday he is sending lawyers to Florida to “expose the fraud” in Broward County, Fla., as vote counting there continues. “As soon as Democrats sent their best Election stealing lawyer, Marc Elias, to Broward County they miraculously started finding Democrat votes. Don’t worry, Florida – I am sending much better lawyers to expose the FRAUD!” Trump said, though he offered no details of any fraud. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding who, specifically, Trump is sending to Florida.
The Senate and gubernatorial races in Florida appear to be headed toward recounts, as votes in Broward and Palm Beach Counties continue to be tallied. Since Tuesday, margins in the Senate race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott, as well as the gubernatorial race between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum have narrowed.
Broward County, specifically, has come under scrutiny because it has been slow to report ballot tallies, prompting lawsuits from Scott and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. They accuse election officials in Broward and Palm Beach Counties of violating state law by failing to disclose information about the vote-counting efforts, including how many ballots have yet to be counted. In addition, Scott called on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate Brenda Snipes, Broward County’s supervisor of elections, over the handling of the ballots. On Thursday, Scott accused her of “mysteriously finding votes until the election turns out the way they want.” Marc Elias, a lawyer representing Nelson, told reporters that the Senate race is likely headed for a hand recount, which would start Sunday.
In addition to threatening to send lawyers to Florida, Trump questioned the shrinking margin between Scott and Nelson and insinuated voter fraud occurred. “Rick Scott was up by 50,000+ votes on Election Day, now they ‘found; many votes and he is only up 15,000 votes. ‘The Broward Effect.’ How come they never find Republican votes?” he said in a subsequent tweet.
"Mayor Gillum conceded on Election Day and now Broward County has put him 'back into play.' Bill Nelson conceded Election - now he’s back in play!? This is an embarrassment to our Country and to Democracy!" the president continued. While Gillum did concede Tuesday night, Nelson did not. The president is en route to Paris for a weekend trip to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Before departing Washington, D.C., for his trip, Trump told reporters there could be a role for the federal government in the possible recount of the Senate and gubernatorial races in Florida.
