US dollar is the reserve currency. To obtain the US dollars other nations need to sell products to the US.
To obtain more US dollars other nations need to export more to US that they import from US. For that purpose they use tariffs, currency manipulation, etc.
That creates trade imbalance and US external debt. So the reserve currency system leads to trade imbalances and debt.
