Bald Head Island is next to Cape Fear. Russian Spy sub was spotted 100 miles off of Wilmington (very close), but on January 22nd. Sightings have been up and down the coast since then.

Marinetraffic shows three US vessels in the area, but trajectories don't seem to include turns.
