US-China trade war: ‘mutual respect’ key to resolution, Liu He tells Henry Kissinger

China and the US should seek to resolve their economic disputes on the principles of “mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit”, Vice-Premier Liu He, China’s top negotiator on trade, told visiting former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger in Beijing on Saturday.

Liu was the latest in a string of senior Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, to meet the 95-year-old diplomat during his visit to the country.

“The two sides should properly solve issues in areas including the economy and trade under the guidance of the consensus reached by the two presidents,” Xinhua quoted Liu as saying. And the resolution should be based “on the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit”, he said.

Kissinger and Xi met on Thursday in Beijing, when the Chinese leader said that Beijing and Washington should “accurately assess” each other’s strategic intentions amid rising trade tensions.

Also on Saturday, the visiting statesman met China’s Vice-President Wang Qishan, just days after the pair spoke together on Tuesday at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore.

New Maldives government to begin untangling secret building deals with China amid warnings of ‘land grab’ and US$3 billion debt

Fresh off his surprise election victory in the Maldives, president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had a warning for his economic team. The island nation had racked up huge debts to China during an unchecked, five-year building spree by the autocrat he had just defeated.

“Be prepared for it to be worse than we think,” one adviser recalled Solih saying.

He was right. Soon after the September 23 election, Solih met the Chinese ambassador and learned that the Maldives owed the Chinese government not US$1.5 billion, as had been widely estimated, but nearly US$3 billion. That’s more revenue than the Maldivian government raises in two years – a staggering figure that makes the diffuse island chain a prime example of how Chinese loans have swamped smaller economies.

Macron: 'Nationalism Is a Betrayal of Patriotism'

French President Emmanuel Macron warned against the dangers of nationalism in a speech aimed directly at the rising tide of populism in the United States and Europe.

With U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders looking on during an Armistice Day centennial observance in Paris on Sunday, Macron said the "ancient demons" that caused World War I and millions of deaths are growing stronger.

The French leader said: "Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. In saying 'Our interests first, whatever happens to the others,' you erase the most precious thing a nation can have, that which makes it live, that which causes it to be great and that which is most important: Its moral values."

Trump has proudly declared himself a nationalist. Macron has set himself up as Europe's foil to nationalist movements that rail against global approaches, like ones that have taken hold in Hungary and Poland among other countries.

Young Kim could win California congressional race but not all Koreans are happy about it

A week ago, hardly anyone in South Korea had heard the name Young Kim. But with her tipped to become the first Korean-American woman voted into Congress, taking over Southern California’s 39th district from long-serving Congressman Ed Royce, she has been a recent fixture in South Korean media.

South Koreans and Korean Americans are divided on whether a victory for Kim, a Republican, would be a good thing. But they all agree it would be a sign of progress for Asian-American voices in US politics.

Born in 1962 as Kim Young-oK in Incheon, South Korea, Kim left the country in 1975 with her family, living in Guam before settling in Southern California. Kim studied business administration at the University of Southern California, where she was known as an outspoken and popular student. She began her political career working for Royce, spanning 21 years as community liaison and director of Asian affairs.

Change tack or face defeat, Brexit critics tell British PM May

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May was under growing pressure on Sunday to change her plan for Britain to leave the European Union to avoid defeat in a parliamentary vote.

With both Britain and the EU suggesting an agreement is close, eurosceptic lawmakers and a leading member of a small Northern Irish party that props up her Conservative government made new threats to vote against the terms of the deal she is working on with Brussels.

The vote in parliament, most likely to come later this year, is gearing up to be the biggest showdown in the lengthy negotiations to leave the EU, Britain’s biggest shift in foreign and trade policy in more than 40 years.

May, who was attending a ceremony to mark 100 years since the end of World War One, found some support from ministers in her cabinet, but it would be hard for her to ignore the growing calls to change tack after a minister resigned and Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party threatened to rebel.
