After an additional day of counting ballots, Democrat Xochitl Torres Small was named the winner in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District race.

Torres Small gave an emotional victory speech shortly after the secretary of state called the race.

“This process doesn’t fix our challenges. Only working together will do that. That’s why I am so grateful for everyone who has stood up in this moment to work together.”

She thanked a lot of people, including her team and parents.

Israeli fighter jets striking Gaza after massive mortar fire from the strip - IDF (VIDEOS, LIVE)

Israeli fighter jets have pounded the Gaza strip, after mortar fire from inside the Palestinian-controlled strip hit a bus in the Israeli side of the border, the Israel Defense Forces have said.

Two Palestinians have been killed, Gaza's health ministry confirmed.

The airstrikes are the latest escalation in several days of reciprocal attacks between Israel and the Palestinian territories. Earlier on Monday, a barrage of mortar fire from Gaza hit an Israeli bus, wounding at least one person, Reuters reported.

Video from the scene showed Israel’s Iron Dome rocket defense system intercepting some of the incoming projectiles.

GPS glitches during NATO’s largest war games in decades blamed on (DRUM ROLL) Russia

Finland’s malfunctioning GPS signal was caused by Russia, and not the 50,000 troops, 10,000 combat vehicles and 250 aircraft taking part in massive Scandinavian NATO drills – at least that’s what the PM thinks probably happened.

Aside from the public pooing, prolific beer-guzzling and frigate-sinking naval mishaps, NATO’s Trident Juncture drills – the largest in decades – also suffered from spotty GPS signals. Regrettably, only one of these hiccups could remotely be attributed to Russian deviancy.

Right on cue, Finnish Prime Minster Juha Sipila has stated that “it is possible” that Russia was the “disrupting party” (referring to the GPS problems, not the pooping near Norwegian kindergartens).

“We will investigate, and then we will respond,” he added. “This is not a joke, it threatened the air security of ordinary people.”

Too impatient to wait for an actual investigation, the Finnish PM went on to speculate that Russia jammed up Finland’s GPS in order to “demonstrate the capabilities for such actions.” Case closed?

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Sipila’s accusations “groundless,” adding that Russia is regularly accused of “all mortal sins.”

“We have no knowledge of Russia possibly having any role in GPS malfunction. You should ask experts or the Defense Ministry. But there is an obvious trend to blame Russia for all mortal sins and then some. As a rule, these accusations are baseless,” Peskov said.

Norway warned of possible GPS problems for pilots in its own airspace at the end of October – when the NATO exercise kicked off. But Norwegian officials have apparently remained more tight-lipped about why such a warning was issued.

‘A train wreck’: Veterans haven’t received GI Bill payments for months due to VA ‘glitches’

A report from NBC News says the Department of Veterans Affairs has been experiencing technology glitches that have delayed GI Bill housing and tuition payments to veterans for months.

Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) called the situation “a train wreck.”

What are the details?

As of Nov. 8, the VA acknowledged that more than 82,000 veterans still have not received their housing benefits, with only weeks remaining in the semester. According to NBC, hundreds of thousands of GI Bill recipients are believed to have been affected by the delays, which have been as long as 90 days in some instances.

John Kamin with the American Legion told KNWA-TV that some student veterans are now facing eviction due to missing payments.

He said many are “left moving back in with their parents or couch surfing because the VA was not able to honor these veterans and their service.”

Veteran Shelley Roundtree is one of those impacted by the delayed stipends. “I’m about to lose everything that I own and become homeless,” he told NBC News. “I don’t want to be that veteran on the street begging for change because I haven’t received what I was promised.”

Roundtree was evicted from his apartment due to the missed housing payments, and lives on his sister’s couch while his possessions sit in a storage facility. He says he can no longer afford to pay the storage fees, meaning his belongings could now be auctioned off by the facility.

How could this happen?

Education benefits for veterans were expanded through the 2017 Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2017 — also known as the “Forever GI Bill” — which included scrapping the time limit for veterans to utilize their GI Bill benefits and changing the way housing payments are calculated.

The VA blamed the ongoing delays on its antiquated IT system, which required upgrades to implement the changes brought on by the Forever GI Bill. But Congressman Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee, said that’s no excuse.

“We’ll get to the bottom of the matter,” Banks told KNWA. “We’ll do everything we can to see that it’s fixed,” insisting that the VA was aware beforehand that its technology would need to be updated.

Rep. Roe agreed. “This is — to be kind — this is a train wreck,” he told NBC. “It’s really frustrating the amount of money that Congress has appropriated for veterans, and this is the way VA has rolled it out. This discussion started over a year ago.”

The Veterans’ Affairs Committee is set to meet on Wednesday to have hearings on the matter.

For 16 years, the US has dumped $1.5 million a day into Afghanistan to fight heroin production and in that time, heroin production has more than quadrupled.

On November 5 yet another US soldier was killed by a member of Afghanistan’s military forces, as the country continues to be wracked by violence in its seventeenth year of war.

Donald Rumsfeld was US Secretary for Defence from 2001 to 2006 under President George W Bush. They, along with other psychotic figures such as Vice-President Dick Cheney, were responsible for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and their legacy is apparent in many spheres, one of which is the drug production bonanza in Afghanistan.

In August 2004 NBC News reported Secretary Rumsfeld as declaring “The danger a large drug trade poses in Afghanistan is too serious to ignore. The inevitable result is to corrupt the government and way of life, and that would be most unfortunate.” He issued the warning that “It is increasingly clear to the international community that to address the drug problem here is important for the people of Afghanistan.”

Rumsfeld, for once during his catastrophic years as chief war-maker, was absolutely right, and his pronouncement about likely danger and impending corruption was spot on. The US invasion and subsequent operations led to Afghanistan becoming the fourth most dangerous and fourth most corrupt country in the world.

The “drug problem” to which he referred has expanded rapidly over the years. It is destroying Afghanistan. It is a main reason for the place being ungovernable.

It’s all very well to blame Afghans for growing poppies and producing opium and heroin, but what they are doing is meeting international demand. After all, there would be no drug industry in Afghanistan if there wasn’t a welcoming market in the drug-loving prosperous West — although it has to be noted that only about four per cent of its massive narcotics production ends up in the US, which gets most of its heroin from South America.

Fed Board Run By Obama Holdovers Is ‘Hemorrhaging’ Taxpayer Money On Legal Fees

A federal board tasked with investigating chemical accidents is “hemorrhaging” taxpayer money on a years-long personnel case that has not yet gone to trial, according to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).

PEER attorneys are representing Daniel Horowitz, former managing director of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), in a legal challenge against the agency for firing Horowitz.

Members of the CSB are scheduled to attend a closed-door meeting Tuesday to discuss a “legal services support contract” worth $300,000. The new contract would be with the law firm Shaw, Bransford & Roth and be worth nearly double a 2015 retainer with the law firm worth $157,000, according to PEER.

“This law firm has found a cash cow in this tiny troubled agency,” PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch said in a statement. “For an agency charged with responding to chemical disasters to divert its limited resources for legal expenses in a needless personnel dispute shows how badly misplaced its current priorities are.”

Former CSB Chair Vanessa Sutherland placed Horowitz on paid administrative leave in June 2015. Horowitz continued to receive his full salary of $161,000 a year while his case remained in limbo for three years. Sutherland fired Horowitz on June 22, 2018, a day before Sutherland left office herself.

Horowitz was removed based on allegations brought by CSB board member Kristen Kulinowski, now the board’s interim chair. Kulinowski said Horowitz engaged in “conduct unbecoming” of a civil servant, according to the letter Sutherland sent Horowitz after making the decision to fire him.

All actions that Horowitz engaged in and was later fired for were lawful and done at the direction of former CSB Chair Rafael Moure-Eraso, PEER says.

“Given the ethical and legal obligations applicable to federal employees to preserve the public trust, it cannot stand as a conclusion that a civil servant is immune from discipline for following the orders of a presidential appointee,” Sutherland’s letter said.

Moure-Eraso, who directed Horowitz, was fired by former President Barack Obama on March 26, 2015, after being subject to multiple congressional and inspector general investigations and accusations that he mistreated CSB whistleblowers.

President Donald Trump has attempted to abolish the agency twice, cutting it entirely from the White House 2018 and 2019 budget proposals, but Congress has ultimately decided to keep funding the board.

CSB declined to comment.

North Korea’s Sohae Satellite Launching Station: Low Level Activity Continues

Commercial satellite imagery from October 31 indicates that North Korea has installed new equipment, possibly for ventilation, on the roof of the eastern-most fuel/oxidizer storage bunker at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station. Prior to May 26, the bunker had a smooth dark roof. While the new equipment seems to have been installed between June and July 2018, previous imagery until late October had insufficient detail to distinguish between partial roof demolition and new equipment installation.

The recent imagery also shows no further dismantlement activity at the vertical engine test stand and launch pad since August. Components that were previously removed remain stacked on the ground at both locations.

These developments, combined with the continued presence and movement of vehicles at the administrative and security headquarters at the entrance to the site along with new objects placed on the roof of one of the buildings, indicate activity continues at Sohae at a low level.

Jerry Brown Blames Climate Change for California Wildfires

California Gov. Jerry Brown blamed climate change Sunday for the California wildfires, despite a complete lack of evidence — a day after President Donald Trump was widely criticized for blaming poor forest management.

According to the Associated Press, Brown, described as an “evangelist” for climate change, also blamed climate change deniers for the deadly fires, saying they were responsible for the deaths of California residents.

“Managing all the forests in everywhere we can does not stop climate change,” he said. “And those who deny that are definitely contributing to the tragedies that we’re now witnessing, and will continue to witness in the coming years.”

Trump’s theory is that over-regulation has led to under-harvesting of forests, leaving more fuel for fires to burn. Brown’s theory is that the global use of fossil fuels is making California warmer and drier, and more prone to fires.

The exact causes of the Camp Fire in Northern California, and the Woolsely fire in Southern California, which are currently burning across a collective 200,000 acres and have killed over 30 people, have yet to be determined.

However, the primary reason California is naturally prone to fires is that it has a broadly Mediterranean climate, with short, rainy winters; hot, dry summers; and occasional periods of prolonged drought.

Moreover, as California’s population nears 40 million people, and as the high cost of housing encourages people to move into rural or peri-urban areas, the risk grows that ordinary human activity will start fires.

Several recent fires have been started by power lines downed in high winds, and even by tire bursts on rural roadways that sent sparks into flammable brush.

In the case of the Camp and Woolsey fires, the deadly blazes have been spread by Santa Ana winds — also a naturally-occurring, seasonal phenomenon as air from the interior mountain ranges moves toward the coast.

Brown has repeatedly blamed climate change for fires and other natural disasters in California — despite pushback from otherwise sympathetic scientists, who have accused the governor in the past of “noble-cause corruption.”

Data released earlier this year showed that the U.S. led all nations in reducing carbon dioxide emissions in 2017, the year that President Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords, amidst dire predictions from his opponents.

EU Council Prez: ‘Brownshirt’ Populists a ‘Fundamental Threat’ to Europe

Populist sentiment poses a “fundamental threat” to the EU, European Council president Donald Tusk has said, proclaiming next year’s elections a battle between pro-sovereignty “brownshirts” and plans for a globalist superstate ruled from Brussels.

In an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza Saturday, the Polish politician attacked U.S. President Donald Trump for lacking sufficient enthusiasm over the prospect of a “united and strong Europe”, before comparing conservative political movements in the EU to national socialist paramilitary forces from the 1930s.

“It cannot be ruled out that there will be two streams represented: one in the colours of the brownshirts — anti-European and focused on nationalism, and the second which wants to push as much as possible for EU integration,” he told the liberal, George Soros-backed newspaper.

Tusk repeated these remarks later in the day at an event in Łódź, Poland, where he grouped together pro-Brexit sentiment, Europeans who support Brexit, those who are “enthusiastic about Washington’s … steps towards isolationism” and those who are pro-Russia, warning there was “no coincidence” that these groups tend to be sceptical of plans for a federal EU superstate.

“The problem is that today, those who are cheering on nationalism in Europe, those who are betting on disintegration and conflict, will inevitably lead to an absolutely fundamental threat,” he said.

Speaking at what German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle described as “a gathering of intellectuals and politicians” in the city, the former Prime Minister of Poland also called on the country to overthrow Law and Justice (PiS), claiming the conservative government — which has previously been denounced by the New York Times for its “virulent anti-Communism”— consisted of “present-day Bolsheviks”.

The Civic Platform figure’s latest rantings against populism came after he lashed out at Viktor Orbán while speaking at the European People’s Party congress in Helsinki last week.

In a thinly-veiled reference to the Hungarian leader, who earlier this year promised his government was “[replacing] a shipwrecked liberal democracy with a 21st-century Christian democracy”, Tusk blasted that “no one has the right … to attack liberal democracy and its foundations”.

Australian PM Calls out ‘Radical, Violent, Extremist Islam’: Muslim Community Demands Apology

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called out “radical, violent, extremist Islam that opposes our very way of life” the day after an Islamic State-inspired jihadist carried out a terror attack in Melbourne. He was immediately told to apologise by Muslim leaders.

Somalian-born Hassan Khalif Shire Ali attacked bystanders with a knife on Friday, claiming the life of one person and injuring two others in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

One witness claimed Ali was yelling “allahu akbar” and is believed to be known to counter-terrorism agencies, the Melbourne Age reports.

Ali had arrived in Australia with his family in the 1980s as a refugee.

SBS reports Mr. Morrison said while he supported religious freedom, religious extremism must be called out.

“Radical, violent, extremist Islam that opposes our very way of life,” he said in a speech on Saturday. “Religious extremism takes many forms around the world and no religion is immune from it.

“But here in Australia, we would be kidding ourselves if we did not call out the fact that the greatest threat of religious extremism in this country is the radical and dangerous ideology of extremists.”

The Australian National Imams Council responded immediately, calling the attack a national tragedy before adding it was “outraged” by the prime minister’s linking Islam to a radical and dangerous jihadi ideology.

“It is extremely disappointing in such difficult times and during a national tragedy, when all Australians of all faiths and backgrounds should be called upon to unite and stand together against any form of extremism and violence, to see our nation’s leader politicising this incident and using it for political gain,” a statement released on Sunday said.

Migrant Family Apprehensions in October Up 378 Percent over Prior Year

Border Patrol agents witnessed a 378 percent increase in the number of migrants families in October compared to the same month in 2017.

The October Southwest Border Migration Report released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed a 378 percent increase in the number of Family Unit Aliens (FMUA) apprehended by Border Patrol agents between ports of entry when compared to the same month in 2017. The number of FMUA apprehensions rose from 4,836 in October 2017 to 23,121 in October 2018.

The El Paso Sector witnessed the largest percentage increase in FMUA apprehensions — 2,236 percent. The number of apprehensions in the El Paso Sector jumped from 212 in October 2017 to 5,185 last month. The sector also reported a near 300 percent increase in the number of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) in October over the prior year’s report.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector saw the greatest number of increased FMUA apprehensions. In October 2017, agents arrested or apprehended 2,923 family units. That jumped to 11,528 in October 2018 — an increase of 294 percent. This sector also reported an increase of UAC apprehensions from 1,463 in October 2017 to 2,310 in the same month this year.

The Tucson and San Diego Sectors also witnessed increases of nearly 600 percent, the report states. The Tucson Sector jumped from 172 family units to 1,163 (584 percent) while the San Diego Sector jumped from 172 to 1,152 (570 percent).

With the exception of the Big Bend Sector, each of the remaining eight Border Patrol sectors reported increases in FMUA apprehensions of 198 percent or more. The Big Bend sector actually reported a decrease of 84 percent compared to October 2017.

Guatemala lead the nations sending family units to the U.S. with 11,376 reported in October. Honduras followed with 8,419, El Salvador with 2,632, and Mexico with 255. Nations sending unaccompanied minors followed a similar order — Guatemala (2,130), Honduras (1,222), Mexico (873), and El Salvador (636).

In total, Border Patrol agents apprehended 50,975 migrants who illegally crossed the border between ports of entry between Brownsville, Texas, and San Diego, California.

‘Make the Gospel Great Again’ Trump Billboard Is Turning Heads

A massive billboard in St. Louis County, Missouri, depicting President Trump with the caption “Make the Gospel Great Again” has drivers doing a double take.

Aside from featuring a variation of Trump’s signature campaign slogan, the billboard contains the biblical quote from John 1:14, “The Word Became Flesh …”

The phrasing and placement of the scripture, which discusses God’s word becoming human in the form of Jesus, left some wondering if the intent was to equate the President to the Son of Man.

“I didn’t know what to make of it,” Sherri Chisholim told KMOV. “I didn’t know what message it was trying to send but I felt like it was somewhat offensive, I didn’t know if they were trying to equate Donald Trump to Jesus.”
