Vatican orders US bishops to delay taking action on sexual abuse crisis

The Vatican has told the US Conference of Catholic Bishops to delay voting on measures to hold bishops accountable for failing to protect children from sexual abuse, the president of the conference said in a surprise announcement Monday morning.

In his announcement, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo said he was “disappointed” by the Vatican’s decision, which he said he learned of on Sunday afternoon. Pope Francis met with his ambassador to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, on Saturday, according to the pope’s public schedule.

Pierre is in Baltimore and addressed the body of bishops on Monday morning, though he did not mention the Vatican’s insistence that the US bishops delay their vote. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops gathers about 200 bishops from around the country twice a year to debate and adopt new policies.

A Vatican spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Pope Francis will convene a meeting of bishops from around the world in February to address the sexual abuse crisis, which has roiled the church on several continents, including North America, South America and Australia.

The Catholic bishops had been expected to debate and vote on several “concrete measures to respond to the abuse crisis,” according to a news release about the meeting in Baltimore.

Those measures, according to the bishops’ conference, included a hotline to report bishops accused of abuse or mishandling abuse cases, standards of conduct for bishops and “protocols for bishops resigned or removed because of abuse.”

The bishops can still debate those measures, but they will not vote on them this week, following the Vatican’s intervention.

Indigenous women coerced into sterilizations across Canada: senator

When she was 17 years old, Liz was coerced by a Children’s Aid worker into having an abortion and being sterilized at a northwestern Ontario hospital, she says — an experience she’s carried for 40 years.

“It was a matter of me almost (being) cornered, if you will, by my worker at the time saying, ‘You better have an abortion because if you don’t, either way, we are going to take that child from you,’” Liz says.

New research shows the forced sterilization of Indigenous women is not just a shameful part of Canadian history. Reports from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the territories suggest it is still happening.

Tubal ligations carried out on unwilling Indigenous women is one of the “most heinous” practices in health care happening across Canada, says Yvonne Boyer, a Métis lawyer and former nurse who is now a senator for Ontario.

She was first contacted by Liz (who asked not to have her last name published, so she could talk freely about something so personal) in 2017 after a news story detailed research Boyer produced with Métis physician and researcher Dr. Judith Bartlett. Their report detailed how Indigenous women were coerced into tubal ligations — the severing, burning or tying of the Fallopian tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus — after childbirth in the Saskatoon Health Region.

Boyer now wants the Senate to study the scope of the issue nationally, making it the focus of her first address to the upper chamber.

“If it’s happened in Saskatoon, it has happened in Regina, it’s happened in Winnipeg, it’s happened where there’s a high population of Indigenous women,” Boyer says in an interview. “I’ve had many women contact me from across the country and ask me for help.”

Some Indigenous women interviewed for the report also felt pushed into signing consent forms for the procedures while they were in active labour or on operating tables, Boyer says, noting a class-action lawsuit against the Saskatoon Health Region was launched in 2017 by two of the affected women.

Each claimed $7 million in damages. Now about 60 women are part of the lawsuit, she adds.

“If there are 60 women just in the Saskatoon area, there are many more that haven’t come forward in that area and there are many more that wanted to come forward but were too traumatized to,” Boyer says. “There’s many more that have buried those memories.”

Elections have now become a mechanism by which present-day voters shift the costs of benefits and handouts to future voters who are not represented in the present

The most popular person in society is he who lies to the public in a manner that excuses the masses from the repercussions of their own actions.

Likewise, the most unpopular person in society is he who tells the masses the truth about what they have set into motion.

Voters tend to elect popular candidates who willingly lie to them rather than those who serve up a dose of reality.

That’s because the masses don’t want to live in reality; they want to enjoy the short term gains that come from displacing long-term consequences to whatever citizens are unlucky enough to live in the future time of reckoning. Thus, elections are the mechanism by which today’s delusional citizens grant themselves present-day benefits at the expense of future citizens who, thanks to the laws of physics, cannot vote in present-day elections. (Because they don’t own time travel machines.)

Future citizens, in other words, are truly victims of taxation without representation.

Creditors DEMAND Sears shut down all its stores, calling its plan for survival ‘wishful thinking’

Sears‘ unsecured creditors are urging the company to shut down all of its remaining stores.

In a bankruptcy filing, the creditors slammed Sears’ plan to stay in business as “nothing more than wishful thinking” and “an unjustified and foolhardy gamble with other people’s money.”

Sears has proposed cutting its store count to roughly 400 profitable stores, then selling the associated real estate to raise cash while the company works to return to profitability.

Sears’ creditors are demanding that the company shut down all its remaining stores.

The retailer’s plan to survive bankruptcy is “nothing more than wishful thinking” and “an unjustified and foolhardy gamble with other people’s money,” a group of unsecured creditors has declared in a new filing.

Sears has proposed cutting its store count to roughly 400 profitable stores, then selling the associated real estate to raise cash while the company works to return to profitability. The company had 687 stores when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-October.

Creditors seem to believe that Sears has little chance of achieving profitability even with only its most successful stores, saying this is a “feat [Sears] could not accomplish in the six years leading up to the commencement of their” bankruptcy filing.

Unsecured creditors have the most to lose in bankruptcy cases. The debt they have extended to debtors – in this case, Sears – is not secured by any real estate or other assets. So they are the least protected in the event of a liquidation.

The costs associated with continuing to keep Sears’ stores open would drain some of the remaining funds owed to these creditors, they said.

Assuming Sears sells the remaining stores within three months, the company could burn through about $US375 million, the filing reads.

“By contrast, pursuing [going-out-of-business] sales for all of [Sears’] stores during the same time period may maximise the value of [Sears’] estates,” it continues.

A representative for Sears declined to comment.

Bayer CEO: Roundup weedkiller cancer victims are ‘nuisances’

There are about 8,700 lawsuits pending against Monsanto, by people who allege that exposure to Roundup weedkiller is responsible for their cancer. Most of the people behind these lawsuits have stories not unlike the one told by Dewayne Johnson, during his landmark jury trial which resulted in a unanimous decision against Monsanto.

Like Johnson, many of these people have non-Hodgkin lymphoma—or they have family members who have already died from the disease. They face long, grueling trials as they go up against the biotech behemoth.

To Werner Baumann, CEO of Bayer (which acquired Monsanto last year for $63 billion), these people are just “nuisances.”

According to a recent Reuters report, Baumann told reporters:

“If we can settle nuisances at some point where the defense costs in preparing cases are higher than potential settlement amounts, we will of course consider it from an economic standpoint.”

No wonder. After all, Bayer could end up on the hook for $800 billion in liability—a possibility that has made shareholders of the German company very unhappy.

But whatever Bayer decides—go to trial or settle—Baumann told reporters he’s clear on one thing:

“We will resolutely and with all means defend ourselves in this (glyphosate) litigation.”

Defending the indefensible

On an August conference call following the verdict in the Johnson trial, Baumann promised investors the agrochemical company would defend glyphosate, and in the meantime, continue business as usual.

“Nothing has changed concerning our strategy. We want to make sure that glyphosate will continue to be available to our key stakeholders as an excellent, safe and very important tool for modern agriculture.”

In other words, Bayer intends to do everything in its power to keep glyphosate on the market—despite a U.S. court’s determination that the weedkiller causes cancer. For Bayer, “business as usual” means profits before human health.

In the meantime, Bayer wants the rest of the world to think that the company is focused on sustainable farming practices that benefit farmers, consumers, and the planet.

Bayer tweeted last month about hosting an international group of food bloggers at one of its Forward Farms in Abbenes, North Holland, where the topic of discussion was reported to be “sustainability.”

Taliban up for talks with Kabul but wants foreign troop pullout first, says Russian envoy

"They [Taliban] have outlined their plan of action in detail. (They) said they will be ready to speak with the Afghan government only after fixing a timetable for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan with the US," he added.

"As confidence-building measures under a preliminary plan, the Taliban demand that all political prisoners be freed and anti-Taliban sanctions, which were imposed back in 1997, be lifted," the diplomat pointed out.

The second meeting of the Moscow-hosted consultations on Afghanistan was held on November 9. Senior diplomats, special representatives and supervisors from Russia, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, the US, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan participated in the event. The Taliban’s political office delegation attended such international meeting for the first time.

Millions Of US Tax Dollars Have ‘Knowingly’ Gone To Terror Groups In Syria From Charities Since Late 2017: Pentagon

Since late 2017, there have been “numerous instances” in which US aid was “knowingly diverted” to terror groups in Syria, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian brach of al0Qaeda), a Pentagon Lead Inspector General said in a report on November 12.

“Since late 2017, USAID OIG investigations have uncovered numerous instances of possible or confirmed diversions to armed groups in Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria, including Ha’yat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.

One investigation found that an NGO’s employees knowingly diverted thousands of USAID funded food kits worth millions of dollars to ineligible beneficiaries (including HTS fighters) and submitted falsified beneficiary lists. The investigation resulted in USAID suspending the program and the NGO terminating the employment of dozens of individuals from March to May 2018,” the report said.

The aforementioned food kits were part of a $30 million relief effort for Syrians displaced from their homes and the relief effort was operated by the US charity Catholic Relief Services, according to Irin News.

It should be noted that while the Pentagon Lead Inspector General report shows the aid delivery to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other radicals as something “unexpected”, this situation is an open secret for any expert following the conflict in Syria. In fact, multiple US-backed humantiarian programs has been for a long time just a part of the wider effort to support terrorists in the war-torn country.

“USAID OIG also investigated diversions of assistance to HTS in another NGO’s programs, which OIG suspected was perpetrated by NGO staff affiliated with the terrorist group. Although the investigation is ongoing, the implementer voluntarily suspended portions of its programs, adapted its program to the changing risk environment, and terminated some employees. In response to these findings, USAID has suspended certain programmatic activities, added additional language in all new awards requiring prior written approval from USAID before programming in HTS-controlled areas, and is undertaking a systematic review of ongoing programs in the region,” the report added.
