Of course they would. The public still thinks Mueller is out to get Trump. All they need is public perception to drag things out until they can control it.
From a DS standpoint:
If RM is "dirty," then anything he's touched is legally suspect and thrown out by even corrupt courts. If the DS is counting on him to be /theirguy/, i.e., comped for them, then any indictments against Trump and/or his team are immediately tossed.
From a Trump standpoint:
If RM is "dirty" then his exoneration of Trump is suspect, and we'll end up with a repeat.
In short, both sides need RM to be clean.
