Human bodies can burn like a candle, slowly by wicking up melted fat to a flame. Eventually there is enough wick to support a very hot flame and there is so much hot grease that it supports carbon rich smoke. That kind of smoke rises much more slowly than a flame and is cool when it hits the ceiling. An overweight person with a high blood alcohol content who smokes, can catch fire. They even have flammable gases coming off their body to support combustion. With the anti-tobacco mood these days, it happens a lot less frequently.
