WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump expects to make a decision on the future of his Department of Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen “shortly,” he told The Daily Caller in an exclusive Oval Office interview Wednesday.
Asked specifically about the possible departures of his chief of staff John Kelly and Nielsen, Trump replied, “Always in an administration after the midterms we make changes.”
“We’re looking at a lot of options,” he continued. “A lot of people want to come in, a lot of politicians who have had very successful careers want to come in.”
“I’m looking at things. I haven’t made a decision yet,” Trump continued. “I will be making a decision on homeland shortly. I have not made decisions yet. I will be making changes on various things.”
“Overall I think our cabinet is great,” he said. “They’re talking about a few names, they’re taking about many.”
Reports of Kelly and Nielsen’s possible departure’s widely circulated Tuesday. Sources familiar with the process told TheDC Tuesday they expect Nielsen to depart the administration in the coming weeks and that replacements were already being actively considered.
