CALVERTON – Members of Riverhead’s Town Board expressed new concerns about plans for a $300-million waste-to-energy incinerator in Calverton after learning that the project’s main proponent was indicted in 1996 in a New York City-wide crackdown on corruption in the waste removal industry.

Joseph Rutigliano, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case, heads the Glen Cove-based company that wants to build the state’s largest waste incinerator at the Enterprise Park in Calverton.

The incinerator would burn garbage shipped by train from New York City and several neighboring East End towns.

Rutigliano is now president of Renaissance Power Systems, a company formed specifically for the Calverton venture. It is an affiliate of Glen Cove-based Coastal Distribution Inc., which has been "trying to enhance the Long Island freight operations of the Long Island Rail Road," Schwenk said. Rutigliano is one of the principals of Coastal.

"More than 300 business types showed up at its shindig at the Orlando Hilton, where they saw cool models of German, Spanish, South Korean and Japanese bullet trains and a cool video of a French train traveling a record 357 m.p.h. When I asked a lobbyist I recognized what he was doing there, he grinned and rubbed his thumb against two fingers."
