In One Year, MSNBC Covered Stormy Daniels 455 Times, War in Yemen 0

As FAIR has noted before (1/8/18, 3/20/18), to MSNBC, the carnage and destruction the US and its Gulf Monarchy allies are leveling against the poorest country in the Arab world is simply a non-issue.

On July 2, a year had passed since the cable network’s last segment mentioning US participation in the war on Yemen, which has killed in excess of 15,000 people and resulted in over a million cases of cholera. The US is backing a Saudi-led bombing campaign with intelligence, refueling, political cover, military hardware and, as of March, ground troops. None of this matters at all to what Adweek (4/3/18) calls “the network of the Resistance,” which has since its last mention of the US’s role in the destruction of Yemen found time to run over a dozen segments highlighting war crimes committed by the Syrian and Russian governments in Syria.

By way of contrast, as MSNBC was marking a year without mentioning the US role in Yemen, the PBS NewsHour was running a three-part series on the war, with the second part (7/3/18) headlined, “American-Made Bombs in Yemen Are Killing Civilians, Destroying Infrastructure and Fueling Anger at the US.” The NewsHour’s Jane Ferguson reported:

The aerial bombing campaign has not managed to dislodge the rebels, but has hit weddings, hospitals and homes. The US military supports the Saudi coalition with logistics and intelligence. The United States it also sells the Saudis and coalition partners many of the bombs they drop on Yemen.

MSNBC chat show/Starbucks commercial Morning Joe did run one segment (4/25/18) that vaguely mentioned the war on Yemen, but failed to note the US’s role in it at all, much less that Washington is arming and backing the conflict’s primary aggressor. Instead, they did the perverse inversion––previously mastered by Washington Post’s Jackson Diehl (FAIR.org, 6/27/17)—of not only ignoring the US’s major role in killing thousands, but painting the US as a noble haven for refugees. The schlocky segment, an interview with writer Mohammed Al Samawi, was a shallow mixture of “interfaith” pablum, poverty porn and self-congratulations to the US for taking in refugees (without, of course, acknowledging that they’re seeking refuge from a crisis the US has created).

Worlds Most Hated Bank to cut 1,000 jobs…

Wells Fargo, the single largest private employer in the Des Moines metro area, will lay off 400 workers, company officials announced Thursday.

Local bank spokesman Steve Carlson said the company notified employees in the home lending department Thursday. About 1,000 positions were cut across the company, including those in consumer lending, payments and the virtual solutions and innovations groups.

“This very difficult decision was made following much thought and careful consideration,” Carlson said. “It in no way reflects the quality or performance of these team members. The team members affected by these changes have each been an essential part of our success.”

Wells Fargo employs more than 15,500 people in Iowa, including about 14,000 in metropolitan Des Moines. The bank’s national home mortgage division is based here. News of local layoffs came just days after Nationwide, another major Des Moines employer, announced it would cut 80 local jobs.

The San Francisco-based banking giant announced in September plans to reduce its national workforce by more than 26,000 jobs. The bank has been under fire since it was revealed in 2016 that employees had fraudulently opened millions of fake accounts to meet sales goals.

United Nations to Declare Abortion and Assisted Suicide a ‘Universal Human Right’

The United Nations Human Rights Committee drafted a memo saying that abortion and physician-assisted suicide should be universal human rights.

The memo, or “general comment” on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, calls for abortion to be decriminalized everywhere. Nations and states should “not introduce new barriers and should remove existing barriers [to abortion] … including barriers caused as a result of the exercise of conscientious objection by individual medical providers,” it said, Crux Now reported Thursday.

The committee that put forward the draft is headed by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, according to Crux. Aborting an unborn baby was illegal in Chile until August 2017 when the nation’s lawmakers ruled to decriminalize abortion in the cases of rape, fatal fetal abnormalities and when the mother’s life is in danger.

Young people should have access to contraception as well as guaranteed access to post-abortion health care “in all circumstances, and on a confidential basis,” the draft also said, Crux reported. Stigma against abortion should also be discouraged, the draft noted.

The U.N. Human Rights Committee successfully ordered the Irish government to pay Siobhan Whelan roughly $34,000 and provide her with psychological treatment in November 2017 to compensate for Whelan’s travel expenses in order to obtain an abortion. Whelan had traveled from Ireland, where abortion was illegal at the time, to the U.K. for the procedure. Whelan was the second woman compensated post-abortion on orders from the UN.

A Harvard professor and human rights in international law specialist, Mary Ann Glendon, pushed back against the draft’s proposals. “First of all, the UN Human Rights Committee has no power to create human rights,” said Glendon, according to Crux.

The committee’s assertion that abortion is a “fundamental human right, and its preposterous claim that abortion rights are derived from the right to life … show how susceptible UN bodies are to lobbying by interest groups that would like to see their agenda items recognized as universal rights,” Glendon added.

Breaking: Rick Scott Wins Recount, Adds 865 Votes to His Tally — Calls on Democrat Bill Nelson to Concede

Florida elections officials announced the results from their first machine recount today in the race for US Senate.

Governor Rick Scott increased his lead over Senator Bill Nelson by 865 votes after the first recount.

This was despite the fact that Broward and Palm Beach Counties added an extra 83,000 ballots to the race 2-3 days AFTER the election.

Scott called on sore loser Bill Nelson to concede on Thursday after the recount numbers were announced.

BREAKING: Palm Beach Fails to Meet Election Recount Deadline After Machines Break Down

Palm Beach County missed the election recount deadline Thursday after the ballot counting machines broke down earlier this week.

Since Palm Beach county failed to make the 3 PM Thursday deadline, their numbers from the initial count on Saturday will stand.

An Obama-appointed judge did rule earlier Thursday that approximately 5,000 voters whose mail-in ballots were rejected due to mismatched signatures would be given until Saturday 5 PM to fix the ballots.

Fox News reported:

Florida’s already farcical recount was dealt yet another blow Thursday when Palm Beach County failed to meet a 3 p.m. deadline, with the election supervisor blaming faulty equipment.

As a result of the county failing to make the deadline, the only one of Florida’s 67, the numbers from the initial count, which were completed Saturday, will stand.

The announcement came soon after a federal judge ruled that 5,000 voters whose mail-in ballots were rejected because of signature issues be given an additional two days to fix the problem.

Palm Beach Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher earlier told reporters she was disappointed her county would miss the deadline.

“The reality is that we were very close two nights ago and then our machines went down,” she said. “It’s not for lack of human effort.”

A federal judge rejected Democrat Bill Nelson’s request to give counties more time to finish recounts, reported the Tampa Bay Times.

The ballot counting machines in Palm Beach County broke down Tuesday evening.

The elections supervisor Susan Bucher said that they had to rerun all early vote tallies in the Senate race.

It looks like the clock ran out for Palm Beach County, but the fight isn’t over just yet.

The Democrats will fight to steal Florida until the bitter end.

FDA Bans Sales Of Flavored E-Cigarettes At Convenience Stores

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, concerned about the rising tide of nicotine use among teenagers, announced on Thursday that it will ban flavored tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, from being sold at convenience stores.

Tobacco, mint and menthol e-cigarette flavors will not be affected; but the sweet-flavored tobacco products will be limited to age-restricted stores or over the internet from sellers using age-verification checks.

As Yahoo News reports, menthol cigarettes are reputedly in the cross-hairs of the FDA, which is rumored to be considering banning them.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said, "I will not allow a generation of children to become addicted to nicotine through e-cigarettes," Gottlieb said.

Yahoo noted, “One of the most popular devices, made by San Francisco-based Juul Labs Inc, has become a phenomenon at U.S. high schools, where ‘Juuling’ has become synonymous with vaping.”

To buttress the idea that e-cigarettes should be limited,tThe FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursay that among high school students who reported using e-cigarettes in the last 30 days, 2018 found a 78% increase from 2017. They added that over three million high school students and 570,000 middle school students used e-cigarettes.

In September the FDA announced, “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a series of critical and historic enforcement actions related to the sale and marketing of e-cigarettes to kids. In the largest coordinated enforcement effort in the FDA’s history, the agency issued more than 1,300 warning letters and civil money penalty complaints (fines) to retailers who illegally sold JUUL and other e-cigarette products to minors during a nationwide, undercover blitz of brick-and-mortar and online stores this summer.”

Gottlieb stated in September:

We’re committed to the comprehensive approach to address addiction to nicotine that we announced last year. But at the same time, we see clear signs that youth use of electronic cigarettes has reached an epidemic proportion, and we must adjust certain aspects of our comprehensive strategy to stem this clear and present danger. This starts with the actions we’re taking today to crack down on retail sales of e-cigarettes to minors. We will also revisit our compliance policy that extended the dates for manufacturers of certain flavored e-cigarettes to submit applications for premarket authorization.

I believe certain flavors are one of the principal drivers of the youth appeal of these products. While we remain committed to advancing policies that promote the potential of e-cigarettes to help adult smokers move away from combustible cigarettes, that work can’t come at the expense of kids. We cannot allow a whole new generation to become addicted to nicotine …

As part of the FDA’s comprehensive plan, the agency also continues to explore clear and meaningful measures to make tobacco products less toxic, appealing and addictive with an intense focus on youth. This could include measures on flavors/designs that appeal to youth, child-resistant packaging and product labeling to prevent accidental child exposure to liquid nicotine.

Juul, Logic, and Imperial Brands Plc, the maker of blu e-cigarettes, supported limiting access to e-cigarettes for younger people. Imperial revealed it has a plan for lock the devices if someone too young attempts to use them.

Police investigation reveals trauma, shame of victims in Connecticut male sex trafficking ring

Connecticut police have identified at least 15 victims of a sex trafficking ring that could date back as far as the 1990s — and they believe more victims could be out there.

The police investigation in Tolland has brought to light the trauma and shame endured by victims of male sex trafficking, according to The Associated Press.

The operation remained hidden for years until a probation officer reported one of the victims in 2016. Since then, at least three people have been arrested in connection with the ring.

What are the details?

The suspects allegedly preyed on “teenage boys and young men who were developmentally disabled, mentally ill and addicted to drugs,” the report states.

Defendant Robert King allegedly recruited victims from drug rehab centers and controlled them by giving them heroin and cocaine. He then required the victims to have sex with other men to repay the cost of the drugs.

King, 53, of Danbury, pleaded guilty in August to conspiracy to commit human trafficking and faces a 4.5-year prison sentence, the report states. Another defendant is wealthy Glastonbury businessman Bruce Bemer, whose attorneys maintain he is innocent. A third defendant, William Trefzger, 74, of Westport, pleaded guilty in February to patronizing a trafficked person. He was sentenced to one year in prison.

What about the victims?

Samuel Marino was a victim who suffered in silence and never told his family or police about being trafficked into sexual relations with much older men.

In 2009, at age 26, he died in a car chase with police. Marino’s connection to the trafficking ring was found years later on a handwritten note in one of the suspected leaders’ home. Police reportedly found it while they were executing a search warrant.

In the note, Marino wrote that he was “angry, ashamed and disgusted at how he was taken advantage of,” the report states.

“He couldn’t deal with the torture and the shame of being prostituted and also of being an addict,” his mother, Linda Marino, told the news outlet. “I’m sure he felt hopelessness and despair. The pain of not being able to help my son Sam when he was going through this is insurmountable.”

Before the investigation, she said she had no idea what her son went through.

Another victim told police he was paid $50 to $80 for sexual encounters with older men. He also said King allegedly threatened to kill him if he told anyone about the trafficking ring. His story came to light after he shared it with a health care worker.

Why is this hidden?

Although both male and female victims are reluctant to speak out, there are often fewer support services for males, Robert Lung, a Colorado state judge and member of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, told the news outlet. That’s because most of the focus is on female victims, he said.

“The perception by society is boys and men are not victims,” said Lung, who is also a sex trafficking survivor. “I can count on one hand the number of organizations that are specific to boys and men in the country. And that’s a pretty big problem.”

President Donald Trump in March appointed an Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, which is expected to announce recommendations early next year. Lung told the news outlet he hopes better treatment for male trafficking victims will be one of those recommendations.

More than 650 illegal immigrants crossing southern border detained in Arizona over two days

As thousands of troops deployed to the southern border await the arrival of a caravan of migrants heading towards the U.S., border patrol agents in Arizona have already been busy, detaining more than 650 illegal immigrants in just two days this week.

Agents in the Yuma Sector said they detained 654 people – most reportedly being family units or unaccompanied minors from Guatemala - on Monday and Tuesday.

Officials said the groups of illegal immigrants are not believed to be associated with the large caravan of mostly Central American migrants that have prompted the military deployment.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday a group of 55 Central Americans waded across the Colorado River near Yuma and surrendered to agents after walking around vehicle barriers in the area.

“Larger numbers [of illegal immigrants] have started to illegally cross shallow portions of the Colorado River near Yuma,” a press release said.

Vinny Dulesky, the special operations supervisor for Yuma Sector public affairs, told Fox News on Thursday that the majority of the groups came in through the east side of the port of entry and had cut through their metal fences to cross in.

He said he did not know the extent of the damage to the fences, but expected fixing them could cost upwards of $1,600 for each one.

“It can get pricey,” Dulesky said.

CBP said apprehensions in the Yuma Sector are up more than 150 percent compared to the last fiscal year at this time. More than 3,600 people were apprehended in the month of October.

Dulseky said they are predominantly seeing family units and unaccompanied minors attempting to enter the U.S. and that the tactics of the illegal immigrants are changing.

“Instead of trying to avoid us, they are running to us, and claim asylum,” he said. “By doing that, it keeps them in the country longer.”

Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies for the Center for Immigration Studies, told Fox News on Thursday that the numbers were “very concerning and startling,” but consistent with trends across the border.

“Yuma is seeing a huge spike and it’s a concern because they don’t have the facilities to process the cases,” she said, adding a majority of the people detained are released to local charities or even at bus stations because federal facilities are overwhelmed. “Most people apprehended and released are not staying in the area … they go join the illegal immigrant population.”

According to CBP statistics, 60,745 people were apprehended or were deemed inadmissible while attempting to enter the U.S. illegally via the southern border in October, the first month of the fiscal year 2019 – compared to the 34,871 in the same month in fiscal year 2018.

A total of 521,090 people were apprehended at the southern border in fiscal year 2018 – up 125 percent from 451,514 in fiscal year 2017. Just in Yuma, more than 26,000 people were apprehended in fiscal year 2018.

Vaughan said the U.S. immigration system is not equipped to handle such an influx of people all at the same time, and drug cartels and smugglers have taken notice.

“They have identified a route that gets people in and they funnel through as many people,” she said. “They move as much product as possible.”

Trump Says Mueller Team Is Threatening Witnesses In Renewed Criticism of Russia Probe

President Donald Trump suggested on Nov. 15 that the inner workings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s team are a “total mess” with investigators using threats to obtain the answers they need from witnesses.

While the president has been a frequent critic of the Mueller probe, his Nov. 15 statements mark the first time he did so after asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign and designating Sessions’s chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, as the acting attorney general.

“The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess. They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts. They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t care how many lives the ruin,” the president added. “These are Angry People, including the highly conflicted Bob Mueller, who worked for Obama for 8 years. They won’t even look at all of the bad acts and crimes on the other side. A TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!”

While the full scope of Mueller’s investigation remains classified, Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed him in May last year to investigate allegations of collusion between Trump-campaign associates and Russia. Mueller reported to Rosenstein until Nov. 7, when Whitaker took over the probe.

Trump has adamantly maintained his innocence and has expressed frustration with the investigation. Mueller has not produced any evidence or indictments related to collusion. Rosenstein has noted that Mueller’s indictments of Russians do not include any allegations of collusion with U.S. citizens.

“Universities will someday study what highly conflicted (and NOT Senate approved) Bob Mueller and his gang of Democrat thugs have done to destroy people. Why is he protecting Crooked Hillary, Comey, McCabe, Lisa Page & her lover, Peter S, and all of his friends on the other side?” Trump wrote in another message.

“The only ‘Collusion’ is that of the Democrats with Russia and many others. Why didn’t the FBI take the Server from the DNC? They still don’t have it. Check out how biased Facebook, Google and Twitter are in favor of the Democrats. That’s the real Collusion!” the president added.
