Argentina finds lost submarine in deep Atlantic, one year after it disappeared

Argentina’s navy announced early on Saturday that searchers found the missing submarine ARA San Juan deep in the Atlantic a year after it disappeared with 44 crewmen aboard.

The vessel was detected 800 metres (2,625 feet) deep in waters off the Valdes Peninsula in Argentine Patagonia, the statement said.

The navy said a “positive identification” had been made by a remotely operated submersible from the American ship Ocean Infinity, which was hired for the latest search for the missing vessel.

The discovery was announced just two days after families of the missing sailors held a commemoration one year after the sub disappeared on November 15, 2017.

Capping Off the Year With More Impartial Judges

Rumors swirl that the Senate, originally set to adjourn on Dec. 14, may pack it up a week earlier. Since Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said after the election that confirming judges would be his “top priority” for the rest of the 115th Congress, let’s take stock.

We are in the longest period of triple-digit judicial vacancies since the early 1990s, when Congress created 85 new judicial positions. More than half of the current vacancies are designated “judicial emergencies” because the positions have been open so long that they’re worsening judicial caseloads.

Vacancies today are 13 percent higher than when President Donald Trump took office. Four of the last five presidents had reduced vacancies by an average of 19 percent at this point.

The Senate has so far confirmed 84 judges in the 115th Congress. The average for Presidents Ronald Reagan through Barack Obama at this point was 81. As a percentage of the president’s nominees, however, the current confirmation rate of 55 percent lags behind the past average of 74 percent.

EU Risks Dangerous Blowback by Undermining Iran Sanctions

Since the election of President Donald Trump, the European Union and the United States have increasingly disagreed on Iran policy. The divergence widened in May with Trump’s announcement that the United States was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement.

Washington has since reimposed nuclear sanctions on Iran in two rounds in August and November. Meanwhile, the EU has sought to preserve the nuclear agreement by trying to protect Iran from renewed sanctions.

The EU’s campaign to shield Iran from U.S. sanctions is doomed to fail.

Iran hangs two currency traders for hoarding tonnes of gold coins amid cash crisis

Iran has executed two currency traders for allegedly hoarding gold coins and attempting to manipulate prices at a time when the country’s economy is reeling from re-imposed US sanctions following US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from a nuclear deal, authorities said this week.

Vahid Mazloumin and Mohammad Esmail Ghasemi were convicted of “spreading corruption on Earth” and making “illegal deals” that destabilised currency markets, state-run IRNA news agency reported late Wednesday. Both men were executed by hanging.

China’s cyber watchdog demands user data from internet firms in latest crackdown on dissent

Any platform that could be used to ‘socially mobilise’ or lead to ‘major changes in public opinion’ will be required to submit assessment reports

Regulator will also conduct on-site inspections and companies must show they are logging detailed information on users

China’s cyber watchdog on Thursday said it will require detailed logs on users from internet firms as part of a new policy aimed at cracking down on dissenting opinion and online social movements.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said that as of November 30 it will require assessment reports from any internet platform that could be used to “socially mobilise” or lead to “major changes in public opinion”.

As part of the assessments, which include on-site inspections, companies must show they are logging information including real names, usernames, account names, network addresses, times of use, chat logs, call logs and the type of device being used.

Dartmouth sued following professor misconduct allegations

CONCORD, N.H. — Dartmouth College was sued Thursday for allegedly allowing three professors to create a culture in their department that encouraged drunken parties and subjected female students to harassment, groping and sexual assault.

Seven women filed the lawsuit in federal court in New Hampshire against the elite college's trustees. It contends that professors William Kelley, Paul Whalen and Todd Heatherton harassed and touched women inappropriately, often while out partying at bars or at their homes where one hosted hot tub parties.

Kelley and Whalen are each accused of assaulting a student after a night of drinking, attempting to seduce women under their supervision and punishing those who rebuffed their advances in the Department of Psychological and Brain Science (PBS).

"The seven plaintiffs, each an exemplary female scientist at the start of her career, came to Dartmouth to contribute to a crucial and burgeoning field of academy study," according to the lawsuit. "Plaintiffs were instead sexually harassed and sexually assaulted by the Department's tenured professors and expected to tolerate increasing levels of sexual predation.

Italy's bishops respond to long-ignored clergy sex abuse

VATICAN CITY — Italy's Catholic bishops are declaring a new era of transparency and truth about clergy sex abuse, as awareness of the scandal that has convulsed much of the Catholic world begins to take hold in a country where it was long ignored.

Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, president of the Italian bishops' conference, said Thursday that a national advisory center of lay and religious experts is being created to help dioceses educate personnel about protecting children and help bishops investigate abuse reports.

Italy's bishops have lagged behind their counterparts in much of the West in confronting clergy sex abuse. Their first guidelines, published in 2014, made clear bishops were under no obligation to report crimes to police.

While the scandal hasn't yet erupted in Italy on the scale that it has elsewhere, there have been several high-profile cases of abuse and cover-up by bishops that show the Italian church is by no means immune to the problem.

Merkel protégé eyes female quota for lawmakers, takes aim at dual citizenship

BERLIN (Reuters) - Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, leading polls to succeed Angela Merkel as head of Germany’s Christian Democrats, said she would consider legislation to ensure better representation of women in parliament, unless her party changed its approach.

A new poll conducted for public broadcaster ARD showed 46 percent of CDU supporters backed Kramp-Karrenbauer for the post, compared to 31 percent for businessman Friedrich Merz and 12 percent for Health Minister Jens Spahn.

Among women, support for Merz dropped to around half the level achieved by Kramp-Karrenbauer, ARD said.
