Residency laws were a major political scandal in Canada a few years ago. You can only be appointed a senator for the province where you have your primary residence. A prominent senator had his primary residence near Ottawa, but claimed as his primary residence a home in Prince Edward Island that the media found out was basically a non-winterized cottage that didn't have the driveway plowed out in the winter.
