The Q drop implies Green made an active decision to intercept, so, how he could have known it was worth putting his life on the line at a moments notice is an interesting question. Who would without good cause?
Likely Q team, rather US/UK military had a constant watch/designation at Green's airport that if something were to happen and it was needed, a human would be on hand to intervene. Likely he was that man. Prepared for that potential for a long time, I bet. Must have known a certain level of shit. But, "once a marine/soldier" etc.
