I misread "dead root system" for dead tree, my mistake.
Not a forester, but all the dry rot trees I've observed IRL don't have living branches that close down to the rot. They're top heavy by the time they've hollowed out that extensively.
Could be the camera angle though. You know how people love to manipulate facts to suit their cognitive bias.
