Graham urges McConnell to allow vote on bill to protect Mueller

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to bring legislation that would protect special counsel Robert Mueller up for a vote.

"[McConnell's] the majority leader, not me. But if it were up to me we’d be voting on the bill and see where the votes are at," Graham said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The South Carolina senator said there's "no indication" that President Trump or acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker are going to interfere with the special counsel, but that "the best thing the Senate could do is just bring this bill to the floor and vote on it."

Trump considering changes at 'three or four or five' Cabinet positions

President Trump said Sunday he's considering making a change to as many as five Cabinet positions amid speculation that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kirstjen Nielsen and White House chief of staff John Kelly could depart imminently.

"I have three or four or five positions that I’m thinking about. Of that, maybe it’s going to end up being two. But I need flexibility," Trump said of Nielsen in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

The president indicated he was disappointed with Nielsen's handling of the southern border, which has been a source of tension for the two.

"I like her very much I respect her very much I’d like her to be much together on the border. Much tougher. Period," Trump said.

The president downplayed multiple reports of a rift between him and Kelly, but suggested that it's no longer a guarantee that the chief of staff will remain with the White House through the 2020 election.

"We get along well," Trump said of Kelly. "There are certain things I love what he does, and there are certain things I don’t like that he does that aren’t his strength."

"I haven’t even thought about John in terms of this," he added. "But John at some point is going to want to move on."

The president has repeatedly said he intends to make changes to his Cabinet following the midterm elections, though he has not provided details.

Trump fired former Attorney General Jeff Sessions the day after the midterms, and The Washington Post reported last week that Nielsen's departure is expected in the coming weeks.

Graham urges GOP leadership to bring vote on criminal justice reform

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday that there's enough bipartisan support to pass a criminal justice reform bill in the Senate if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will bring it up for a vote.

Graham said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he's confident a criminal justice reform bill that President Trump has backed would receive 80 votes in the Senate, and would be a positive first step for the government in the wake of a contentious midterm election cycle.

"Let’s start 2019 on a positive note," Graham said. "I’m urging Sen. McConnell to bring the bill to the floor of the Senate. It would get 80 votes. Mr. President, pick up the phone and push the Republican leadership.

"The Republicans are the problem here, not the Democrats," he added.

Trump has voiced support for the legislation, which has been championed by his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner. However, some Republicans have voiced opposition to the bill, and McConnell has reportedly told the president there will not be time to vote on it before the end of the year.

Graham called the bill "the most important bipartisan piece of legislation in the Congress today."

The legislation would reduce lifetime mandatory minimum sentences after two prior felony drug convictions to at least 25 years; reduce minimum sentences after one prior conviction from 20 to 15 years; and make the Fair Sentencing Act retroactive.

Trump gives Whitaker free rein over Mueller probe: 'It's going to be up to him'

President Trump on Sunday said he is giving acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker free rein over special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, including limiting or shutting down the investigation.

“It’s going to be up to him,” Mr. Trump said in an interview aired on Fox News Sunday.” “I wouldn’t get involved.”

Mr. Trump’s pick of Mr. Whitaker, the former chief of staff to ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions and outspoken critic of the Mueller probe, ignited renewed accusations that the president was trying to squelch the investigation.

Democrats and some Republicans have called on Mr. Trump to find another attorney general. And Senate Democrats, with support from Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, are pushing legislation to protect the Mueller probe.

Mr. Trump said he was unaware of Mr. Whitaker’s previous public remarks criticizing the probe and saying there was no Trump campaign collusion with Russian medaling in the 2016 presidential race.

But the president commended Mr. Whitaker for taking that view.
