HollywoodLife, the celebrity gossip site, reports that Coogan, 23, was flying to Las Vegas with several young friends, who also were killed. Three of them, including Coogan, are said to be “Instagram celebrities” because of their large following on that website. Coogan is known on Instagram as mariahsunshiinee, and has 31,300 followers.
Coogan’s family lives in Santa Rosa and her parents told San Diego’s ABC 10 that she had moved to San Diego to pursue a modeling career and recently had moved to West Hollywood. She was known for her passion for horses as well as her modeling
Just before the crash, Coogan took a video of herself and fellow passengers, including Anand “Happy” Patel, 26, who also had a large Instagram following. The Federal Transportation Administration is looking into the cause of the crash, and it appears that James Pedroza, the 28-year-old pilot, did not have a pilot’s license.

Coogan was born and raised in the state of California for most of her life. [4] Her parents, who survive her, are, Chris and Stacey Coogan. She grew up in the city of Santa Rosa. In the evening of April 9th, 2018, Coogan, Helena Lagos, nightlife promoter Anand 'Happy' Patel, and nightclub host and aspiring pilot James Pedroza, were all on board the Piper PA-24 Comanche when it crashed into a golf course moments after taking off. The group had been at the Phoenix Lights Festival for the weekend and were headed back to Las Vegas, Nevada . [14] [15] [16]
Moments before the fatal crash, Coogan had video recorded herself and others while inside of the plane and shared it on her Instagram account. [17]
The owner of the plane, James Pedroza, was not driving the plane at the time - the pilot's name has not been disclosed to the media. Investigators have related two possible scenarios that caused the crash. They believe that plane caught fire, or, that it was at capacity with 6 people on board. An investigation is ongoing.
