Senate barrels toward showdown over Trump's court picks

The Senate is bracing for an end-of-the-year brawl over President Trump's judicial nominations.

Republicans view filling the lifetime court seats as their top priority and are expected to confirm as many nominees as possible before the Senate adjourns for the year, infuriating Democrats and their allies who are powerless to stop Trump’s picks.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is already teeing up votes for two nominations — Jonathan Kobes to be an 8th Circuit Court judge and Thomas Farr to be a district court judge — for when senators return from their Thanksgiving recess.

And Republicans expect McConnell to barrel through more nominations before Dec. 14, the chamber’s target date to wrap up their work for the year.

“That’s Sen. McConnell’s No. 1 priority is to continue to move judges,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the second-ranking Republican.

There are 35 judicial nominees available for votes on the Senate calendar, leaving more nominations than days left in the Senate’s work schedule to confirm the picks.

McConnell has pledged that he will move each of Trump’s nominees who are out of committee by the end of the year. If he's going to make good on that plan, he'll either need a final nominations package or keep the Senate in session through the holidays.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said McConnell has pledged he won’t leave any court nominees behind, adding that it was up to Democrats to determine when they wanted to leave town.

“It’s really up to them whether they want to confirm those on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, or whether they want to confirm them earlier in December by yielding back the time,” Cotton told radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Protesters march against migrant caravan in Tijuana; Police respond with riot gear

They chanted “Mexico! Mexico!” and “yes to migrants, no to invaders!” They sang the national anthem and waved Mexican flags and banners and signs, with messages urging the migrants to go home and urging the government to take action.

“Our country doesn’t have the resources to sustain itself,” said Tijuana resident Guadalupe Barrera. She held a sign that read in Spanish “no more caravans.”

“This is not racism,” she said. “We are opposed to the invasion.”

The protesters then marched along the street Paseo de Los Heroes toward the sports complex that’s been converted into a temporary migrant shelter, where some 2,400 migrants are staying.

About 150 federal and local police responded with riot gear and physical barriers, preventing the protesters from getting to the migrants.

A block away from the riot barriers, 20-year-old Kevin Flores peered at the commotion through a metal gate at the sports complex. He said the protesters were racist.

“We came here for the opportunities available in the U.S. or any other country,” he said.

Army's secret plans to put troops on the streets to deal with potential chaos in the wake of a 'No Deal' Brexit

The army has been drawing up secret plans to put troops on the streets to help with potential chaos in the wake of a no-deal Brexit.

Plans have been drawn up by the military for Operation Temperer, who usually help police on the streets in the threat of terrorism, in the event of a no-Brexit scenario.

Contingency plans involve how the military could help keep public order amid such as the delivery and stockpiling of medicines to hospitals across the country, according to The Times.

The army has around 1,200 troops on 24-hour standby which can deal with a range of operations and contingencies.

And a further 10,000 military personnel are available to assist with an emergency at short notice.

As a USanon, I had to research this.

Sounds beautiful for UK Freedom.

Not so good for the cabal.

Brexit: What would 'no deal' look like?

There's a lot of discussion at the moment about a 'no deal' Brexit. What does that actually mean?

  1. Money: With no agreement in place, according to a House of Lords report there would be no legal obligation for the UK to make any payment as part of a financial settlement.

That would leave a huge hole in the EU budget. It would save the UK money in this instance, but it would antagonise the rest of the EU and further sour relations. Legal action, possibly via the International Court of Justice in The Hague, could not be ruled out.

  1. Citizens: Without a deal or other residency rights, the entitlement of EU nationals to reside in the UK, or of UK nationals to reside elsewhere in the EU, could technically disappear overnight.

  1. Trade: With no new trade agreement with the EU, the rules of the World Trade Organisation would apply. Tariffs would be imposed on goods that the UK sends to the EU, and on goods the EU sends to the UK.

  1. Customs: A government White Paper on customs, published yesterday, sets out options for a 'no deal' scenario in more detail.

A customs bill will make provision for the UK to establish a stand-alone customs regime from day one, applying the same duties to every country with which it has no special deal.

  1. Regulations: With no deal of any kind in place, the UK would suddenly cease to be a member of dozens of regulatory agencies that govern many aspects of daily life.
