Apple and Samsung fined for deliberately slowing down older phones.

Apparently, planned obsolescence is not profitable enough for the cell phone oligopoly, so they have implemented proactive obsolescence. Also, note how the US MSM largely ignored this story.

via theguardian:

Apple and Samsung are being fined €10m and €5m respectively in Italy for the “planned obsolescence” of their smartphones.

An investigation launched in January by the nation’s competition authority found that certain smartphone software updates had a negative effect on the performance of the devices.

Believed to be the first ruling of its kind against smartphone manufacturers, the investigation followed accusations operating system updates for older phones slowed them down, thereby encouraging the purchase of new phones.

In a statement the antitrust watchdog said “Apple and Samsung implemented dishonest commercial practices” and that operating system updates “caused serious malfunctions and significantly reduced performance, thus accelerating phones’ substitution”.

It added the two firms had not provided clients adequate information about the impact of the new software “or any means of restoring the original functionality of the products”.

Samsung told owners of its Galaxy Note 4 phone to install a new version of Google’s Android operating system intended for the more recent Galaxy Note 7, but which users claimed rendered the old model sluggish.

Likewise, Apple told iPhone 6 owners to install an operating system designed for the iPhone 7, leading to problems for owners of the older model.

Both firms were issued the maximum fine of €5m each and ordered to display a notice on their Italian websites informing customers of the watchdog’s decision.

Apple was fined an additional €5m for failing to give customers clear information about “essential” characteristics of lithium batteries, including their average life expectancy, how to maintain them or eventually replace them in the firm’s iPhones.

Finland provides no evidence to prove Russia’s role in ‘GPS disruption’ during NATO drills

The Russian embassy believes that "a thorough expert dialogue, involving the relevant agencies from the countries of the region, is necessary for the consideration of such situations"

Share

HELSINKI, November 19. /TASS/. Helsinki has provided no evidence proving that the jamming source which caused a GPS failure during NATO’s Trident Juncture exercise was located in Russia, the Russian embassy in Finland said in a Monday statement following a meeting between Russian Ambassador to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov and the Finnish Foreign Ministry’s Permanent State Secretary Matti Anttonen.

According to the statement, the ambassador "stressed that aviation safety was as important for Russia as it was for Finland." He also pointed out that "we received no information proving that the jamming source was located in Russia. In this regard, we believe that a thorough expert dialogue, involving the relevant agencies from the countries of the region, is necessary for the consideration of such situations," the embassy said.

"Finland agreed it was reasonable to study the possibility of enhancing the efficiency of inter-agency information exchange concerning the navigation situation in connection to civil flights and take timely steps in response to its possible changes," the statement added.

Finland’s Foreign Ministry earlier expressed its concern about the so-called "GPS-disruption" to the Russian ambassador and said it expected "additional information and responsible behavior from Russia." On Friday, Norway’s Foreign Ministry also discussed the issue with the Russian embassy.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry said on November 13 that Russia had disturbed GPS signals during NATO’s war games. "Between October 16 and November 7, the jamming of GPS signals was recorded," it added, blaming Russian forces on the Kola Peninsula for the disturbance. The Finnish Foreign Ministry said on November 15 that Russia had been responsible for GPS jamming.

Earlier, Finland’s Prime Minister Juha Sipila had not written off Moscow as being potentially behind the ‘GPS disruption’. However, the country’s President Sauli Niinisto believes it is important to carry out an investigation first. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously said that Moscow had information neither about GPS failures during NATO’s military drills whatsoever, nor about Russia’s possible involvement.

Yet Another GDPR Disaster: Journalists Ordered To Hand Over Secret Sources Under 'Data Protection' Law

When the GDPR was being debated, we warned that it would be a disaster for free speech. Now that it's been in effect for about six months, we're seeing that play out in all sorts of ways. We've talked about how it was used to disappear public court documents for an ongoing case, and then used to disappear a discussion about that disappearing court document. And we wrote about how it's been used against us to hide a still newsworthy story (and that leaves out one other GDPR demand we've received in an attempt to disappear a story that I can't even talk about yet).

When I wrote about all of this both here on Techdirt and on Twitter, I had a bunch of "data protection experts" in Europe completely freak out at me that I had no idea what I was talking about, and how any negative impact was simply the result of everyone misreading the GDPR. I kept trying to point out to them that even if that's true in theory, out here in the real world, the law was being used to disappear news stories and was creating massive chilling effects and burdens on journalists. And the response was the same: nah, you're reading the law wrong.

And now we have an even more horrifying story of the damage the GDPR is doing to journalism. There's a Romanian investigatory journalism publication called RISE Project that has reported on corruption in Romanian politics. Not surprisingly, not everyone is happy about that. OCCRP – the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project – a partner to RISE Project has the worrisome details about how the very Romanian government that RISE Project has been breaking corruption stories on has magically found the need to use the GDPR to demand the journalists turn over their sources.

The full story is a bit complex, but in reporting on Liviu Dragnea, the president of the ruling party in Romania, RISE Project made some connections between Dragnea and a local Romanian company, Tel Drum SA, "currently involved in a massive scandal in Romania."

RISE Project journalists found proof that Dragnea and his family benefited from Tel Drum SA money and had close relationships with the corporation’s executives. They spent holidays abroad together, went hunting together and Tel Drum SA paid for various construction, maintenance and beautification works at properties belonging to Dragnea’s family. Some of these were posted on RISE Project's Facebook page.

And, magically, soon after that, the Romanian Data Protection Authority (ANSPDCP), whose boss was appointed by Dragnea's party (and who is facing some corruption accusations as well), started demanding all sorts of info from RISE Project under the auspices of the GDPR.

Among the demands?

The purpose and legal basis of publishing on the Internet (Facebook) of personal data, at the adress https://www.facebook.com/notes/rise-project/teleormanleaks/1937024593056150;

The date/period of time when the said personal data was published on your Facebook account;

The source from where the personal data published on Facebook was obtained;

The support (electronic and/or physical) where you stored the documents/images published on Facebook;

If the mobile storage devices (tablet, HDD, memory stick) were/are password protected or encrypted;

If you have other information/documents containing personal data of the said people;

If the personal data or documents that contain personal data of the said people were revealed in other circumstances - with the specification of these circumstances;

The way in which you informed the said people, in conformity with Art. 13-14 of GDPR.

Google and Facebook are gobbling up the internet's subsea cables

More than 5,700 kilometres of the Atlantic Ocean separate the coastlines of France and Virginia. But in 2020 they will be directly connected for the first time by the Dunant submarine cable which will boost internet capacity between Europe and the east coast of the US.

When Dunant becomes operational it will join more than 428 submarine cables, spanning thousands of kilometres, that makeup the backbone of the internet. But this cable is unlike any other.

Named after the Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross and winner of the first Nobel Peace Prize, the cable is owned by Google. It's the first transatlantic submarine cable that has been privately financed and deployed by one of the big tech firms.

"The issue often for the content providers – Google and Facebook – is they currently cannot source enough capacity from the existing cables for themselves," says Alan Mauldin, research director at TeleGeography, a telecoms data firm that tracks and maps subsea cables. "So they need to build to get that much access themselves.

The result is more of the internet's physical infrastructure is owned by the companies that have the biggest presence online.

Dunant may be the first subsea cables owned by one of the big tech firms to cross the Atlantic Ocean but it isn't the company's first private cable. In January 2016, Google also announced the Curie cable that would run from Chile to Los Angeles. In recent years, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook have all invested in submarine cables to keep pace with increasing demand.

Previously, big technology firms spent millions on cables as parts of consortiums. In return for their investment, each company gets a say in its route and, crucially, a share of its capacity. But big tech doesn't like to share.

Ex-Australia PM Tony Abbott Says Move Embassy to Jerusalem, Defy Muslim Backlash

Former Australia Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the time has come to move Australia’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in defiance of threats from Muslim-majority neighbours Indonesia and Malaysia.

Mr. Abbott has joined fellow Liberal Party elder John Howard and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg in backing the move, announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison during a recent by-election campaign.

The former premier said Monday that the embassy should be moved to Jerusalem so Australia can show its support for the “only functioning liberal pluralist democracy” in the Middle East.

“I think by far the preferable course of action, particularly now that we’ve announced that we are considering it, is to do what should be done and that is, put our embassy in the capital of this very friendly country that deserves our support,” he told Sky News.

“Israel is a country under existential threat, it is a sibling pluralist democracy, it’s a country which shares our values, which in important respects, metaphorically at least, speaks our language.

“And why shouldn’t we be showing solidarity with the only functioning liberal pluralist democracy in the Middle East, by supporting them and putting our embassy in their capital?”

Some of Judaism’s holiest sites are located around Jerusalem, capital of the Jewish state, including the Temple Mount and Western Wall in Jerusalem; the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in Hebron; and Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus.

Australia drew pushback from Asian leaders on the possible move last week at the ASEAN summit including Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad, with the latter saying the move would make the country a larger target for terrorists.

“In dealing with terrorism, one has to know the causes,” Mahathir said. “Adding to the cause for terrorism is not going to be helpful.”

Australia does have support in its ambitions, as Breitbart Jerusalem Bureau Chief Aaron Klein has noted:

In May, the United States became the first country to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a show of support for Israel that angered the Muslim world.

Mr. Frydenberg cited previous remarks by Mahathir in which he disparaged followers of Judaism as evidence of why Australia should not react to threats.

“He has questioned the number of people that have been killed in the Holocaust,” Mr. Frydenberg said. “He banned Schindler’s List as a movie being shown, even though it showed the amazing story of a righteous Gentile who saved many people from persecution.”

Mr. Morrison responded by saying the treasurer is “filling in the history” on Mahathir’s “record on various issues over time.”

“Australia decides foreign policy,” he said. “I am not going to have our policy dictated by those outside the country.”

Italians First! ‘If Italy is harmed, we will reject the eurozone budget’ – Interior Minister Salvini

Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Monday discussed the eurozone budget proposal. The ever rising in popularity, Matteo Salvini, says if Italy is harmed, they will reject the eurozone budget.

The French-German proposal seems to do just that and as such, Italy will reject it. Italy and Brussels have been in what can only be described as a showdown over Italy’s 2019 budget draft.

The European Commission has rejected the draft whilst Italy has dug in their heels refusing the change it.

In late October when the EC demanded changes to the draft, Premier Giuseppe Conte said “the critical opinion of the Commission was in the air, we decided to elaborate a budget that rejects austerity and embraces growth.”

Deputy Premier Luigi Di Maio leader of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and also labour and industry minister also said in October that “it’s the first budget that the EU doesn’t like. I’m not surprised: it’s the first Italian budget that was written in Rome and not in Brussels”.

Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini at that time also said that “they’re not attacking a government, but a people. They are things that make Italians even more irritated and then some people complain that the European Union is at the lowest point of its popularity.

“We’re going forward with a smile, the Italians are asking that of us,” said Salvini. Today League party leader Salvini rejected the budget proposal stating: “If it damages Italy, as seems to be the case, obviously it will not have our support”.

Hungary wants to know how many migrants arriving in Europe were “paid” by the UN

Hungary’s Fidesz-led alliance expects the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to respond in connection with the issue of “migrant cards”, the ruling parties’ group spokesman told press conference on Sunday.

Istvan Hollik said Hungary wanted “a straight answer”concerning how many migrants arriving in Europe were“paid” by the United Nations, how many types of cards were in circulation and funded by the UNHCR, how much money the organisation had paid out via the cards as well as how much money each migrant received.

He noted these questions have already been addressed to the European Commission president and the European Parliament’s LIBE committee without any response so far.

“I’d also like to know what the UN High Commissioner for Refugees thinks about the possibility that the money doled out through the cards can be used for people smuggling and financing terrorism,”

he added.

Hollik said the questions were relevant since the UN has a standpoint on migration and various UN leaders openly make pro-migration statements while attacking Hungarian anti-migration policy.

The spokesman said the UN is still working on adopting a migration pact whose aim is to make migration a fundamental human right.

“Fidesz, the Christian Democrats and the Hungarian government resolutely reject this,” he said, adding several other countries besides Hungary, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and the United States, rejected the UN document.

One-Man State: Netanyahu Is Defense Minister, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister & Health Minister Of Israel

On November 18th, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu named himself Defense Minister in addition to also being the Foreign Minister and Health Minister.

He began his speech with a long and detailed account of the five years he spent in the military, as a soldier and officer in the IDF’s most elite of units, Sayeret Matka. He also spoke about how he almost died in the Suez Canal during the War of Attrition. He also mentioned how he was wounded in the rescue mission on the hijacked Sabena Airliner in 1972. He did not mention that he was wounded by friendly fire. He also mentioned his brother, Yoni’s death in Entebbe.

He emphasized his combat record, not only because he assumed the post of Defense Minister, but also because this was his first election speech of the 2019 campaign.

Experts and media are expecting snap elections, and according to Haaretz it is likely that Benjamin Netanyahu will lose them. The Prime Minister, of course, refuses to acknowledge that there will be elections.

Netanyahu insisted that there should be no election for another 12 months and that in such “a complex security period” it would be “irresponsible” to hold an early election.

“We are in them midst of a military campaign, and you don’t leave during a campaign, you don’t play with politics,” he said, criticizing former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s decision to resign, as well as Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who is threatening to also leave. “The security of the state is above all else,” Netanyahu said.

He also condemned that Jewish Home Chairman Bennett demanded a ministerial position as a condition to stay in the coalition. “There is no place for politics or personal considerations,” when it comes to Israel’s security.

The current Education minister threatened to “bring down the government” if he is not named Defense Minister. Without the Jewish Home, Netanyahu’s coalition would shrink from 61 seats to just 53 and lose the required majority of the 120-seat Knesset to survive no-confidence motions.

Bennett, along with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked also threatened to leave the government on the morning of November 19th.

It should be OK, however, even if both Bennett and Shaked resign. Netanyahu is more than likely capable of encompassing all minister positions in his own cabinet, to highlight Israel as “the only democracy in the Middle East.” And not simply a totalitarian regime in which the Prime Minister can also hold three different positions in his own cabinet simultaneously.

On the morning of November 19th, Bennett and Shaked walked back on their resignation threats handing Netanyahu a “big win”. The Education Minister also downplayed “the apocalyptic predictions” that Netanyahu made in his speech.

“We are facing a security challenge not because of an apocalyptic reason but because there have always been threats,” Bennett said. ”Something bad is happening to Israel. We have stopped winning.”

In his Trump-style, “winning-focused” speech Bennett also reiterated the government’s inability to implement right-wing policies.

“The ship, called the State of Israel, is floating in a wrong direction,” Bennett said. “There is what to do and when Israel decides to win we will go back to winning.”

He also reiterated that Netanyahu is capable of restoring Israel’s strength and deterrence and if that happens the Education Minister would remove all his conditions.

The Comfort had provided assistance in Ecuador and Peru before moving on to Colombia as part of the 11-week “Enduring Promise” mission throughout the region.

The ship had been deployed to the region several times in the past to tend to vulnerable populations, but this particular mission is unique in that it was conceived to relieve pressure on local medical systems following the surge of migrants from crisis-stricken Venezuela.

Coup Cues? Haiti Protesters Call for President's Ouster on Independence Day

Amid deadly clashes that occurred among protesting crowds across Haiti, the local US Embassy issued an alert warning its employees against leaving their shelters “until further notice” and announced late opening hours the following day.

Thousands of Haitians took to the streets Sunday in the capital city of Port-au-Prince and marched chanting anti-president and anti-corruption slogans, burning tires and flying suggestive black and red flags in opposition to the country’s current state symbol of independence from France, the red and blue banner.

The latter replaced the black and red flag back in 1986, when Haiti’s first democratically elected president, Jean Bertrand Aristide, took office. As many as six people were killed and at least five others wounded during the rallies, which largely embraced an anti-corruption agenda.

The protesters blamed the deaths on the police, claiming that gunmen from the police had appeared in unmarked cars and fired into the crowd, which is something the general director of Haiti’s national police force (PNH) has denied. He asserted that law enforcement had done their best to restrain their use of force against protesters, and a follow-up investigation showed that they had not been involved in the clashes.

One of the activists was quoted by The Voice of America as saying that the blue and red colours “gave us insecurity,” rendering it impossible for them to go to school, to “go where I need to because it’s not safe.” The young man went on to call for the president to leave office “as soon as possible,” with many others chiming in with similar calls.

Large-scale protests hit the capital, Port-au-Prince, and demonstrations of a lesser scale, but under the same slogans, took place in other major cities, such as Jacmel, Gonaives, St. Marc, Jeremie and Cape Haitien. The US Embassy in Haiti even tweeted a warning, requiring its “American employees to shelter in place until further notice” and going on to announce a delayed opening on Monday.

President al-Assad to Jordanian parliamentary delegation: Relations between countries must always be driven by peoples’ interests and aspirations

President al-Assad said that the importance of the parliamentary delegations’ visits stems from the fact that they are the real reflection of the popular positions and the compass for the bilateral relations between countries, which must always be driven by the interests of the peoples and their aspirations. President al-Assad affirmed that the adherence of the Syrian people and army to their national belonging has been one of the basic factors which contributed to their steadfastness despite all the attempts that targeted this belonging.

25 Militants Killed In Turkish Military Operation Against Its Own Proxies In Syria’s Afrin

200 members of the al-Sharqiyah Martyrs Gathering and a few other Turkish-backed miltiant groups had been accused by Turkey and the rest of Turkish-backed militant groups of conducting various crimes in Afrin.

While the common explanation of this situation in Turkish-affilated media is that Ankara seeks to restore security and order in the area local sources say that the main reason of this effort is to punish too “independent” militant groups. In fact, all Turkish-backed militant groups have been accused of variuos crimes multiple times. However, Ankara has punished no group for this besides the al-Sharqiyah Martyrs Gathering.

Mikdad: Western states’ policy of hypocrisy and distortion harmed OPCW work

Western states have been pushing for a politicization of its activities and using the organization to push their agendas and to get ahead of the Conference’s results in a clear violation of the CWC.

Responding to these attempts, Dr. Mikdad stressed in a speech addressed to the conference the necessity of embracing a spirit of collective responsibility for enhancing the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and preserving its independence and professionalism, highlighting the importance of restoring the consensual spirit governing the work of member states.

Mikdad added that the policy of hypocrisy and distortion practiced by some Western states and their allies has significantly damaged the technical nature of the organization’s work, as these countries have turned the decision-making organs in the organization into a platform for politicization and a tool for pressure and serving special agendas.

Russian Aircraft Buzzing Over Idlib Ahead Expected Escalation In Northwestern Syria

On November 18, an Il-20 reconnaissance plane and several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Russian Aerospace Forces conducted multiple sorties over radical militants positions in the northern Syrian governorate of Idlib, according to Syrian opposition sources. The Il-20 is a signal and electronic intelligence plane, that is also equipped with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capable of taking radar images. Electro-optical systems were also installed in some planes of this type. The main task of the Il-20 is spying on the enemy’s communication and identifying its positions.

Local observers said that this number of sorties is unusual, as Russia has stepped down its aerial operations over Idlib after reaching the deconfliction agreement with Turkey. According to them, the reconnaissance sorties may be a part of ongoing preparations to resume military operations in the militant-held governorate.

Two days ago, Syrian and Lebanese sources reported that the SAA and its allies may soon launch a limited military operation around Idlib. According to the sources, the supposed operation will be a response to the repeated violation of the deconfliction agreement.

I saw several sauces but none reliable, just more on civilian deaths see below

Kurdish meetings to discuss Turkish military movements, civilians killed in Hajin, rising tensions in Idleb and weapon caches found in Daraa. Catch up on everything that happened over the weekend.

https://syrianobserver.com/EN/news/46927/what-happened-over-the-weekend.html

I said it at the time and i believe the actions since prove that when Bolton went to meet Putin a few weeks back he gave the Russians and by extension Syria and Iran the green light to clean up the remaining terrorists including the so called US coalition aka SDF, Turkistan army ISIS Al sham France Germany etc… which as you'd probably know are all one and the same cabal.I believe the plan needed to be delayed until the white hats could destabilize the UK, France and Germany as they would've simply did what they did a few months and claim Assad was going to bomb his own people again, Russia did this by filming their proxies setting up the chemical weapons FF and also tracked the delivery of said weapons from those countries, basically check mating them. I believe there are a few thousand white hat US marines operating with the local and Russian forces which obviously I can't prove and would always be denied but there was a deployment authorized by Trump not so long ago which does give credence to my claim. The SAA have cleared Al safa and have Al tanf surrounded, they with the assistance of Russia are about to deal with Idlib. I think once these areas are cleared they will pose the question how come we can take out the terrorists and the 70 nation strong US coalition can't? The Hajin Euphrates valley mess is a joke and the news generally coming out of there is pure bullshit used to shape narratives.

Watch – Kelley Paul on Criminal Justice Reform: ‘Just Locking People Up Is Not Solving the Problem’

Kelley Paul, the wife of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), sat down with Breitbart News Deputy Political Editor Amanda House last week to offer her thoughts on why criminal justice reform is needed in America.

Paul says she is very enthusiastic about the FIRST STEP Act, a bill that would ease federal sentencing laws and that President Trump put his weight behind last Wednesday.

“I think it’s really exciting and incredible. This is an incredible day for bipartisanship, for a great bill that hopefully we will get brought to the Senate floor,” Paul told House moments after President Trump’s endorsement. “I appreciate the leadership that Jared Kushner and Ivanka have shown on criminal justice reform.”

Paul claims this is an issue all Americans can support.

“If we were to be able to actually finally make some strides in this area, it will be the first strides that have been made,” Paul said. “President Obama wasn’t able to do this. This is something that, I think, right and left come together. People in the Christian communities and Jewish communities come together on. Progressives come together on it. So, it’s a great bill. It is very modest in scope, that’s why they call it the first step and I’m hopeful that we can get a vote on it.”

Referring to her father-in-law, Mrs. Paul added, “Ron Paul, in the 1980’s, was talking about how overcriminalization of drug use was going to have a lot of unintended consequences and we are seeing that now with entire communities being decimated with so many mothers and fathers incarcerated.”

“We are talking about low-level crimes, many of them non-violent crimes. This is legislation that would affect people who are involved with drugs, which we have seen across our country as such a major scourage at this time. I really think people’s thinking has evolved on drugs. No one thinks they’re good, but we recognize that just locking people up is not solving the problem.”

“We need more opportunities for recovery. We need more opportunities for rehabilitation. We need to give people, frankly, a second chance in a lot of these situations,” Paul explained.

“This legislation, not only has some sensing reform but it also does speak to people who are incarcerated, giving them opportunities, frankly, for hope,” Paul stated. “One of the most poignant aspects of it, to me, is that we have so many people that are incarcerated multi-days drive away from their families and if you are behind bars and you’re serving time, who are the people that would support you and give you hope to make right changes in your life?”

“It has devastating consequences on the children, especially of incarcerated mothers. So this bill has a requirement that they would put someone in a federal prison no more than 500 driving miles away from their family, which, to me, I think my goodness, the bare minimum. 500 miles is still a very long way.”

This bill, according to Paul, gives people an “opportunity to earn some good time back while they’re in prison by taking part in job training, taking part in anger management – if they’ve had issues with that, mental health concerns, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.”

In closing, Paul argued that it is in everyone’s interest to support this legislation.

“I don’t think we can ever lose sight of the fact that 95 percent of the people in our prisons will one day be released and they will be rejoining society. So it’s truly a benefit to all of us, it’s in all of our best interest, to give these people opportunities for redemption and a path forward.”
