I wouldn't worry about a repeater. They're already set up all over the place. Lots of radiofags if you know where to look for them. Old white guys with antennas on their cars.

In a SHTF scenario, licenses are not needed. You may get some flak, but if you try to be polite and ADMIT that you are unlicensed, might be OK. At least you can lurk.

Cheap VHF/UHF radios like Baofeng require computers to configure. Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu, Alinco, etc. are much easier.

Anons wishing to buy shortwave receivers, beware, to listen to hamfags and to skyking, you need one that will do single-sideband (SSB). Milcoms are UpperSideband (USB). Hamfags use USB above 10MHz and LSB below 10MHz.

Ham stores do not ask for a license before selling. Ask for a copy of "getting started in ham radio." book to go with it.

I've worked inside of a faraday cage. much simpler to wrap gear in al-foil. Save some extra al-foil for your hat!
