The damage comes from the voltage surge from power lines in the grid and your home/business acting as antennae. You have to have unplugged all wires (air gap) to your device for a Faraday enclosure to be effective. Grounded ammo cans and sea land containers are excellent protection against EMP/CME. If using wire mesh, the smaller the mesh the better. Solid metal box is best.
