breaking crypto is all about finding patterns (real patterns, not confirmation bias).
for ex. breaking encryption for video game hacking - eg Ultima Online, Diablo 2, WoW, etc, involves comparing very specific actions in packet trace captures. And very 'small' amounts of data per capture, to reduce white noise.
Once you identify a pattern, you can begin using that first pattern to help identify other patterns, with 'new' actions. Eventually you have enough that the rest just falls into place, more or less.
tedious work. lots of side by side (hmm s x s - 5:5? any I digress) comparisons and lots of comparing similar data to see if a pattern emerges.
I didn't have much patience for it, so once I'd cracked the Ultima Online encryption once, I didn't bother trying again (they changed their encryption keys every patch, which made for a royal pita if you had third party 'hacks' or approved utils to maintain).
Anyway, there's no real magic to it, and no specific need for crypto 'experts' as they're mostly just fumbling in the dark as well until the first few dead-hit matches are identified. They just have the advantage of more patience and self-assurance that yes, any code is unbreakable, given enough time.
