Skull Cult at Göbekli Tepe

Göbekli Tepe is one of the world’s most significant, yet mysterious, archaeological sites. Between the tenth and eighth millennia B.C

The discovery further underscores the complex ritual behavior exhibited at Göbekli Tepe. Marks on the three partial skulls indicate that they were de-fleshed, modified, and even painted. Deep incisions were repeatedly carved into the skulls with stone tools to create grooves that ran up the forehead and toward the back of the head.

Professor Klaus Schmidt, a pioneer of excavations in Göbeklitepe, known as the “zero point in history” in the eastern Turkish province of Şanlıurfa, died of a heart attack while swimming in Germany at the age of 61.

Menlo Park resident Mark Rich, 58, the husband of former Menlo Park City School District board member Laura Rich, was killed in a small-plane crash on Saturday, Aug. 19, friends of the family have confirmed.

Mr. Rich’s single-engine, home-built Wheeler Express crashed under unknown circumstances near the Madras, Oregon, airport around 1:50 p.m., according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor

Samuel F. Pellman, a professor of music at Hamilton College, was killed in an accident while riding his bicycle on November 9. He was a groundbreaking scholar in the area of electro-acoustic music. Shortly before his death, Mr. Pellman completed work on the pitch design for the chimes in the Tower of Voices, a monumental musical instrument being constructed at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., to commemorate the passengers and crew members who died when their hijacked plane crashed at that site on September 11, 2001.
