I think the EMP threat is over rated in that it is largely fear porn for the masses. Nevertheless, it can be overcome by a Faraday cage. An old microwave will function as a Faraday cage.
USB sticks, hard drives, extra ECM for your car, etc. will all fit in said old microwave.
