It is true that lithium is often combined with anti-depressants (SSRI's) to PREVENT hypomania and the associated increased risk of suicide. If it were not for the protective actions of Lithium, there would be far more suicides from antidepressant drug intake.

Big Pharma HATES lithium and they worked like hell to keep it off the market starting in the early 1900's. 7-up used to contain low does of lithium citrate until the FDA botched (on purpose?) safety studies on lithium chloride to be used as a salt substitute in 1949-50. Cardiac patients on extremely low sodium diets started dropping dead from gram quantities of lithium chloride being used as a salt substitute. The FDA didn't think (whoops!) to test toxicity in animal/human studies under low sodium conditions. Public outcry led to a lithium ban on all food products which paved the way for more FDA regulations over many foods, etc.

It took another 20 years to fight the laws and stigma surrounding lithium before the FDA would approve it for the treatment of bipolar disorder, where it is still considered the gold standard world wide despite the fact that BIG Pharma fugking hates lithium. No money for them if patients are on lithium instead of one of their diabetes, Parkinson's disease, etc, etc, causing antipsychoitic billion dollar drugs.
