Reading this I have to be grateful for my mother's maxim (she was a nurse) that governed our childhood and has lasted me into my sixties and kept me out of the grasp of doctors and medication.

This is what she would say to us if we complained about feeling unwell as children.

"If it doesn't get better it will get worse. If it doesn't get worse it will get better. You will either live or you will die. If you don't die you will live. If you don't live you will die. Now run along and get on with it!"

I have rarely had to resort to prescription meds for my whole life - tooth abscesses being the exception where I have had to take antibiotics. Maybe my mother's WW2 generation dismissal of anything that seemed self-indulgent is the key to health.
