New book says Manhattan DA dumped probe of columnist’s JFK-linked death

A new book on the late newspaper columnist Dorothy Kilgallen blasts Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. for slamming shut a purported re-investigation into her mysterious death. The glamorous reporter and TV personality, 52, was found dead in her Manhattan townhouse on Nov. 8, 1965, amid her own probe of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination two years earlier.

In “Denial of Justice: Dorothy Kilgallen, Abuse of Power, and the Most Compelling JFK Assassination Investigation in History,” author Mark Shaw pursues a theory outlined in his prior book, “The Reporter Who Knew Too Much,” that she was murdered to quash her dogged pursuit of the truth. To be published on the 55th anniversary of JFK’s death, the book accuses Vance of a cover-up. Shaw claims a “reliable source close to the DA’s office” told him that Vance’s staff found Kilgallen’s missing JFK file and “buried it.” “We will decline comment,” a Vance spokeswoman said in response.

The morning after Kilgallen’s last appearance as a panelist on the hit TV game show “What’s My Line?,” her body was found slumped in bed, naked under a blue bathrobe, still wearing the makeup, false eyelashes and floral hair accessory she had donned for the show. The city’s then-chief medical examiner ruled her death an accident caused by a combination of booze and sleeping pills. Shaw contends Kilgallen was drugged by accomplices of New Orleans Mafia boss Carlos Marcello, who feared her planned book would accuse him of plotting the JFK assassination and the killing of JFK assassin Lee Harvey-Oswald, who was shot to death by nightclub owner Jack Ruby.

Kilgallen, a syndicated columnist for the New York Journal-American, covered Ruby’s murder trial and scored a brief interview with him. Aiming to reconstruct why Kilgallen disputed the widely accepted “Oswald alone” theory, Shaw analyzed the 2,000-page transcript of the 1964 Ruby trial. He cites little-known testimony that, as JFK was killed, Ruby sat in a Dallas Morning News advertising office with a direct view of the Texas School Book Depository, where Oswald fired the fatal shot. Others testified that Ruby got into press conferences that night and the next day “making like a reporter.” A parking garage manager overheard Ruby on a pay phone discussing Oswald’s transfer to the county jail. “He told whoever he was talking to that he would be there,” the witness said. Ruby later maintained his shooting of Oswald was spontaneous.

Jamal Khashoggi’s last words caught on shocking tapes

Dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi pleaded with four men to “release my arm” after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul — chilling comments caught on tape in the final moments before he was murdered and dismembered, Turkish media reported. Khashoggi, 59, was confronted by four men when he arrived Oct. 2 at the consulate’s “A unit,” where the visa department is located. “Release my arm! What do you think you are doing?” Turkish media quoted Khashoggi telling them, citing a seven-minute recording that captured the encounter, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The four men, said to be members of a Saudi “hit squad,” then removed the writer to another area of the consulate that contains administrative offices, where sounds of a quarrel, beating and torture are heard on another four-minute recording. “Traitor! You will be brought to account,” a man identified as Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, the leader of the team and an associate of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, tells Khashoggi. In his writings for the Washington Post, Khashoggi was highly critical of the ruling royal family, including the prince.

For 11 minutes, sounds of beating and torture can be heard on the tape before it goes silent for an hour and 15 minutes. Saudi officials can then be heard entering the unit and a voice breaks the silence. “It is spooky to wear the clothes of a man whom we killed 20 minutes ago,” Mustafa al-Modani, who was there to act as Khashoggi’s body double, says on the tape. He then complains to the team members that the writer’s shoes are too small for his feet and they tell him to wear his sneakers.

Al-Modani was captured on video cameras outside the consulate wearing Khashoggi’s clothes in an effort to make it appear that Khashoggi exited the building. The reports said Khashoggi was dismembered in the consulate’s “C unit,” but no recordings from that section exist. Saudi officials gave conflicting accounts of what happened to Khashoggi before finally acknowledging that he was killed by members of a team who were trying to return him to the kingdom. They insisted that the crown prince was not aware of the operation.

Hooker known as ‘Pretty Hoe’ pleads guilty to sex trafficking

A California prostitute known as “Pretty Hoe” admitted to luring teens into sex trafficking and coercing one victim into getting a face tattoo of her pimp’s name, officials said. Melanie Denae Williams — who often refers to herself as “The Most Hated Hoe in LA.” — pleaded guilty to sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion in Los Angeles federal court, according to the US Department of Justice.

Federal prosecutors said the 23-year-old used her influence on social media to lure young women into working as prostitutes. In one incident, she allegedly ordered a woman to strip off her clothes, then threw bleach on her and beat her with a broomstick, according to officials. Williams also reportedly took to social media to share several videos of her beating and using firearms to threaten victims. The same day she entered her plea, Williams took to Instagram to post a video saying, “We don’t give a f–k about s–t you [are] talking about.” As part of her plea deal, Williams faces a minimum of 15 years in prison and will be required to pay restitution to the victims. She is set to be sentenced Jan. 28.
