PANIC IN DC!

Federal investigators probing possible Whitaker Hatch Act violations

Federal investigators are investigating whether acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker violated federal law after it was revealed his failed 2014 Iowa Senate campaign received thousands of dollars of donations in January and February of this year.

The investigators are probing whether Whitaker’s accepting of the donations, amounting to $8,800, violated the Hatch Act’s prohibitions on political activities by federal employees.

A spokesperson for the Office of Special Counsel confirmed to CNN that it had received a complaint from the watchdog organization American Oversight and a case file had been opened. The office has the power to investigate Hatch Act violations and determine possible reprimands, but cannot take disciplinary action itself, according to CNN.

Government rejected Boston bomber Tsarnaev’s cooperation offer

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev offered prosecutors a guilty plea in exchange for life in prison, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday.

Tsarnaev “offered to provide certain kinds of cooperation and assistance, in the course of plea negotiations,” according to the court documents that were examined by NBC News.

However, prosecutors did not take the deal. Tsarnaev was convicted and sentenced to death for his role in the 2013 bombing that killed three people and injured hundreds more.

Former Librarian of Congress James Billington dead at 89

Billington's family, including wife Marjorie, confirmed he died Tuesday due to complications from pneumonia.

Billington served as librarian of Congress from 1987 to 2015 after he was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan. He had previously been a history professor at Harvard and Princeton universities.

Billington's achievements include doubling the size of the library's traditional analog collections, acquiring the only copy of the 1507 Waldseemuller world map, obtaining Marquis de Lafayette’s papers, and reconstructing former President Thomas Jefferson’s original library.

His tenure, however, was not without controversy. When he retired, effective Jan. 1, 2016, his leadership had been investigated a number of times by government watchdogs over complaints regarding several managerial and technological failures.
