I was a manager at a large utility company for many years. Right at the peak of my career where my earnings were the highest (100K+) I voluntarily took a severance package and retired early at 57. I left a lot of money on the table walking away like this.
Why?
I got so goddamned tired of the bullshit corporate politics. Political correctness. Say one thing, do another. Performance-challenged (woman and minorities) that you really could do much about as long as they didn't do something obviously egregious. And so on.
I got it from both ends, from below and above, but the senior/executive leadership was the worst.
So I walked away on my terms 9 nears ago.
I don't miss it one bit. I love my freedom.
