My Dad was a physicist who hung out with physicist's. I was in high school when they started talking about Quarks, anti Quarks, Up, Down, Charm, Color, Muons, Gluons etc. To be honest, at the time it was confusing for some of them.
On another note, I'd appreciate your opinion on why our (totally comped) governments and universities has poured billions and billions into ever greater particle accelerators. The pure research angle doesn't wash with me, didn't wash with my Dad's buddies either. They all thought there was an ulterior purpose. Thoughts on this slow Thanksgiving morning?

Though that was an obvious reason, they didn't feel it justified the gorillion dollars lavished on it. In my first introduction into conspiracy theory, they felt the "unseen hand" behind government had ulterior motives. Those varied from seeking spiritual enlightenment to hastening the "end of the world" in some nihilistic ritual of self destruction. A black hole would accomplish that nicely.
After seeing the ceremonies at the dedication's of CERN and the Gothard Tunnel, I think they're onto something.
