Malaysia’s Mahathir dumps pledge to ratify UN treaty on racial discrimination amid domestic backlash
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has dumped a pledge to ratify a UN treaty against racial discrimination amid intense pressure from Malays, who claim it would jeopardise controversial race-based affirmative action policies that benefit them.
The government confirmed on Friday that it would not adopt the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) in the latest in a series of controversial U-turns on key election promises.
The move comes after Mahathir said that plans to ratify the treaty could be abandoned as it would be near-impossible to secure a necessary amendment to the federal constitution without a two-thirds parliamentary majority.

Gunmen attack China's consulate in Pakistan as violence flares across region
KARACHI (Reuters) - Three suicide attackers stormed the Chinese consulate in the Pakistani city of Karachi amid a series of gunshots and an explosion on Friday, but were killed before they could force their way in with a car packed with explosives, police said.
The attack, claimed by separatist insurgents from the impoverished southwestern Pakistani province of Baluchistan, killed four people, including two police officers, but it was far from the most deadly on a particularly violent day across the region.
A suicide attacker on a motorbike set off explosives in a crowded festival and market in northwest Pakistan’s Orakzai region, killing at least 25 people at around the same time as the Karachi bloodshed.
Over the border in eastern Afghanistan, a suicide blast at a mosque on an army base killed at least 26 people and wounded 50, security officials said. Earlier in the week, a suicide bomber killed 55 people in the capital, Kabul.

200 thousand laws on the books, just to enforce the 10 commandments

2001 Space Odyssey? Scientists Built An AI Inspired By HAL 9000
Technocrats who are obsessed with becoming aliens in the galaxy are turning to AI (think, HAL 9000) to operate all the technological systems required to keep fragile humans alive. Mars is their first major target. What could possibly go wrong? ⁃ TN Editor
Humans are going places. NASA’s newest plan is to launch crewed missions to Mars in the 2030s, and we’ll need the most advanced and reliable space technology to help get us there safe and sound.
That’s where HAL 9000 – the villainous, insane killbot from 2001: A Space Odyssey – comes in. Believe it or not, sci-fi’s most notorious murder machine was the inspirational basis for a new HAL-like cognitive computer system designed to autonomously run planetary space stations for real one day.

Sex robot brothel wants to open in Texas, anti-sex-trafficking group looking to stop it
HOUSTON - Plans for a Houston sex robot brothel are under fire by an organization fighting sex trafficking.
According to ABC13 Eyewitness News, a Toronto man is looking to bring his business to Texas where there is reportedly a large market for sex robots.
A lawyer says due to a statute banning those types of businesses that was ruled unconstitutional a decade ago, the brothel would technically be legal, ABC13 reports.

UNEP Chief Booted Over Excessively High Carbon Footprint
Of course, there is more to the story but basically the UN turned on its top environmental executive for globe-trotting and logging too many plane flights. The internal report said that his penchant for travel was “contrary to the ethos of carbon emission reduction”. ⁃ TN Editor
The UN’s environment chief, Erik Solheim, has resigned following severe criticism of his global travels and internal rule-breaking which led some nations to withhold their funding.
The Guardian understands Solheim was asked to resign by the UN secretary general, António Guterres. Sources at the UN Environment Programme (Unep) said that countries unhappy with Solheim’s conduct were holding back tens of millions of dollars, threatening a financial crisis at the body.
A draft internal UN audit leaked to the Guardian in September found Solheim had spent almost $500,000 (£390,000) on air travel and hotels in just 22 months, and was away 80% of the time. The audit said this was a “reputation risk” for an organisation dedicated to fighting climate change.
A UN staff union leader called some of the revelations “mind-blowing” and a prominent climate scientist accused Solheim of “obscene CO2 hypocrisy”.

UN Using Federal ‘Public-Private-Partnerships’ As Trojan Horse For Global Policies
The UN’s agenda for America rolls on without respect to which party is elected to office, whether conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, appointed by President Trump is no exception as he implements PPP throughout the nation’s land holdings. ⁃ TN Editor
The article, Recreation Advisory Committee for Public Lands, shed a positive light on Sec. Zinke’s promotion of public-private-partnerships (PPP), giving the “motorized recreation industry a voice in the creation of public lands policy… that involve roads, trails and waterways on federally-controlled lands”. Sec. Zinke plans to accomplish this through his newly established Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC). But there is a far greater, and more dangerous agenda with Zinke’s plan for corporate involvement in public land.
In 2014, the Blue Ribbon Panel on Sustaining America’s Diverse Fish and Wildlife Resources (BRP) was created by Bass Pro shop founder John Morris, and former Wyoming governor Dave Freudenthal. BRP “represents the outdoor recreation retail and manufacturing sector, the energy and automotive industries, private landowners, educational institutions, conservation organizations, sportsmen’s groups and state fish and wildlife agencies.” One of their goals is “recommending a new funding mechanism to support state fish and wildlife conservation to ensure the sustainability of all fish and wildlife for current and future generations.” “The Blue Ribbon Panel includes 26 business and conservation leaders” and “was convened to evaluate and recommend a more sustainable funding approach to avert a fish and wildlife conservation crisis.” Panel members include United Nations (UN) business partners (Toyota, Shell), UN non-governmental organizations (NGO) (NWF, AS, NSSF), and other groups funded by UN partners.
