Lavrov: Determined to uproot terrorism in Syria

ussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that work will continue to eliminate terrorism in Syria and return displaced Syrians to their homes.

In a joint press conference on Friday with Italian counterpart Enzo Milanesi, Lavrov said that guarantor states for the Astana process (Russia, Iran, and Turkey are working to eliminate terrorism and return displaced Syrians to their homes, and that Russia is working towards forming the committee to discuss the Syrian constitution as per the agreement reached at the intra-Syrian dialogue congress in Sochi.

Lavrov said the next Astana meeting will be held on November 28-29.

In the same context, Lavrov said during the 4th Mediterranean Dialogues forum that the crisis in Syria must be resolved according to resolution no. 2254, and this is what the Astana meetings and the Sochi congress are based on.

Israeli Defense Minister Met With Syrian Operatives During In Course Of Conflict

Maj. Gen. Gershon Hacohen, a former Israeli military General Staff Corps commander, revealed that Moshe Ya’alon, Israel’s former Defense Minister, had met with Syrian operatives as a part of Israel’s involvement in the war torn country.

“They came and Bogie wanted to understand who they were. He asked one of them, ‘Tell me, are you a Salafist?’ And he said, ‘I really don’t know what a Salafist is. If it means that I pray more, then yes. Once I would pray once a week, on Fridays, now I pray five times a day. On the other hand, a Salafist isn’t meant to cooperate with the Zionists. I’m sitting with the defense minister of the Zionists. So I don’t know.’ This means that identity components are very fluid. They don’t tell you where the person is going.” Maj. Gen. Hacohen said at an Israel Democracy Institute conference, the Israeli Haaretz newspaper reported on November 23. Maj. Gen. Hacohen claimed that the Syrians who met Ya’alon were “activists.” However, the fact that the Israeli defense minister met with them suggests that they were military commander of the FSA.

Israel’s cooperation with the FSA in southern Syria is well-documented. Last year, the Syrian opposition news agency SMART published a video of FSA fighters using 107mm rockets that was supplied by the Israeli military. Both sides even planed to establish a “safe zone” in southern Syria, according to a report of the Intercept.

Europeans Help ‘Idlib Rebels’ To Equip Missiles With Chemical Warheads – Report

French militants-experts are helping Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) [former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria] to arm newly delivered missiles with chemical warheads, local sources familiar with the situation told the Russian news agency Sputnik on November 22. White Helmets organization transferred five containers with toxic chemicals from one of HTS’ warehouses in the town of Kafr Nabl in the southern Idlib countryside to an underground facility in Idlib city, which has recently been built near the Central Prison.

“The five containers were handed over in the underground facility to French experts, of the black ethnicity .. they arrived recently to modify missiles of an unidentified type, which were supplied along with their launchers through the border,” Sputnik quoted the sources as saying.

Local sources close to HTS leadership and the White Helmets organization have been leaking detailed information about the groups’ chemical activities to several Syrian, Lebanese and Russian news outlets for more than three months now. Russia and the Damascus government believe that HTS and its allies are planning to use these weapons to stage a chemical attack and blame it on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in order to provoke a military action from the U.S. and its allies.

Pentagon’s ‘lost’ trillions went to people connected to US military-industrial complex: Ron Paul

Former Republican congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul has said that “the Pentagon’s lost trillions have nothing to do with defense, adding that the “money propping up the high lifestyles of those connected to the military-industrial complex.”

Dr. Paul, a three-time American presidential candidate and the founder of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, made the remarks in an article published by his website on Monday.

Deputy US Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has recently acknowledged that the Pentagon has failed its first-ever comprehensive audit, saying, “We failed the audit, but we never expected to pass it.”

“It was an audit on a $2.7 trillion dollar organization, so the fact that we did the audit is substantial,” Shanahan claimed.

The first-ever audit of the of the $2.7 trillion enterprise that is the Pentagon identified widespread problems in cybersecurity, but found little in the way of savings that could offset potential budget cuts next year, according to officials.

Pentagon’s comptroller David Norquist, who has played a key role in the audit, said after the report release that although no glaring instances of fraud were detected in the US military establishment, its Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Special Operations and the Transportation Command all received failing grades.

In his article, Dr. Paul wrote that “the results are as many of us expected. After spending nearly a billion dollars to find out what has happened to trillions in unaccounted-for spending, the long look through the books has concluded that only ten percent of all Pentagon agencies pass muster.”

The political commentator stated that “the neocons love to throw out bogeymen like China and Russia as excuses for more military spending, but in fact they are hardly objective observers. Look at how much the military contractors spend funding the neocon publications and neocon think tanks telling us that we need more military spending! All this money is stolen from the productive economy and diverted to enrich neocon cheerleaders at our expense.”

“Of course the real problem with the Pentagon and military spending in general is not waste, fraud, and abuse,” he wrote. “The problem with military spending is the philosophy that drives it.”

Obama State Dept. Alum: Trump Believes ‘Foreign Dictators’ over U.S. Intelligence Community

Rep.-elect Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) accused President Donald Trump of believing “foreign dictators” over the U.S. intelligence community in a Friday-morning CNN interview.

Malinowski, who served in the State Dept. during the Obama administration and was elected to Congress weeks ago, said it is “very, very dangerous” that the president allegedly refuses to accept reports from the CIA that top Saudi Arabian officials ordered the killing of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.

CAMEROTA: Let’s just look at the president’s position [on Khashoggi] a little bit more closely, if I can paraphrase him accurately. Basically what the administration feels is there are a lot of human rights abuses all over the world, and yes, this was a hideous, gruesome murder from what we can tell. But this was one man, not a U.S. citizen, and so is it that important to blow up the alliance between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, where Saudi Arabia can help the U.S. in other venues, over this?

MALINOWSKI: Oh my goodness. First of all, it’s not just a human rights abuse. This is something that happens very rarely. Saudi Arabia reached out across its borders and murdered somebody who was lured from the United States to go into one of its embassies in Turkey. This is something we cannot allow to become the new norm — dictators killing their critics on foreign soil. The United States is full of thousands and thousands of refugees from countries like Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia, who are critics of those governments. Do we want them to start being murdered in Washington, New York, Paris, and London? It’s really important to send a signal that this is a line you can’t cross.

As for Saudi Arabia, when they help us it’s because it is in their interest, not because they’re close allies of the United States. They are going to continue to help us on Iran because they are threatened by Iran and they need help there. This is not about blowing up the relationship. It’s about sanctioning an individual. It’s about separating our relationship with Saudi Arabia with this incredibly volatile, unpredictable young man [Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud], who is campaigning to be the ruler of this country for the next 50 years.

CAMEROTA: You were in the Obama State Department. You are one of the people who went to Congress with intelligence to try to get their attention that Russia was interfering in the 2016 election. As you know, President Trump has been very reluctant to admit or get his arms around this. What does it mean to you that he’s using that same sort of logic now with a dictator, where he believes their denials and their word over the CIA and U.S. intelligence officers?

MALINOWSKI: It seems like the President instinctively sympathizes with powerful leaders, who are accused of moral transgressions. I don’t think it’s too hard to figure out why that is. The result is that he believes foreign dictators, whether it’s Putin or the crown prince of Saudi Arabia or Kim Jong-un, over the conclusions of our own intelligence community. And that is not just a ridiculous thing that we should laugh at, it’s very, very dangerous to our national security.

30+ killed, many injured as terrorist attack rocks Pakistani market

Over 30 people were killed and 50 injured after a blast hit a market in Pakistan. Conflicting reports say that either a suicide bomber carried out the attack or the explosive device was hidden in vegetables.

Three children and 28 mourners are believed to be among the 31 victims, according to local Geo TV. The network says that another 33 people were injured in the suicide blast on Friday after the attacker went to the market on a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, AFP citing local officials gives a different account, saying that the improvised explosive device was hidden in a carton of vegetables. The agency also put the death toll at 31 and said that 50 more people were injured, with 17 in critical condition.

The attack on a market was labeled “terrorist” by Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, who also blamed US failures in neighboring Afghanistan for the blast.

Swiss backtrack on support for UN migration pact

Switzerland's government on Wednesday backtracked from its pledge to support a United Nations migration pact after lawmakers insisted they have the final say on the matter.

The United States, several European countries along with Israel and Australia have already said they would reject the compact, which seeks to open up legal migration and better manage migratory flows.

The text was agreed in July following 18 months of negotiations and is due to be adopted next month at a meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco.

"Switzerland will not attend the intergovernmental conference for the formal adoption of the global compact," the Federal Council, the country's executive branch, said in a statement.

Bern had on October 10th announced it would approve the pact in a declaration that also expressed reservations, notably that the country already applied the UN recommendations.

Parliament then intervened, insisting that lawmakers wanted the final say on Switzerland's ultimate adoption of the deal.

"The Federal Council believes that the United Nations Global Compact for Migration is consistent with Switzerland's interests," the statement added.

"However, the Federal Council wishes to postpone its final decision pending conclusion of the parliamentary debates."

Callum Paton reports for Newsweek that on August 9, 2017, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) revealed construction details of a new $800 million underground wall to run along Israel’s 40-mile border with Gaza and extending into the Mediterranean.

Israel already is protected by a 143-mile border fence, touted by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for drastically reducing illegal immigration along its southern border:

“Israel … had a real problem with illegal immigrants coming in from the southern border, about 16,000 in one year. In two years, they constructed 143-mile fence, about $2.9 million per mile, and it cut that illegal immigration rate from about 16,000 to I think 18. Cut it by 99 percent.”

The new $800 million wall is to protect Israel from the threat of attack tunnels dug by Hamas, the Islamist militant group that has controlled Gaza since 2007, and to stop Hamas fighters from swimming ashore.

The wall, 19-ft. high and 131 feet underground, will be constructed mainly from concrete, reinforced with iron bars and pipes and covered in sensors. Work on the wall began in October 2017 and is expected to take two years to complete.

Meanwhile, Paul Dijks reports for Voice of Europe that on Nov. 20, 2018, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited Israel’s need to protect its borders as the reason why Israel will not be signing the United Nations’ global migration pact set to be formally approved on December 12 in Marrakech, Morocco.

Netanyahu said in a statement:

I instructed the Foreign Ministry to announce that Israel won’t participate [in the Marrakech gathering]and won’t sign the migration pact. We have a duty to guard against illegal infiltrators. [Jewish Nation-State Law requires the government] to stand up for a clear migration policy that protects our borders from illegal infiltrators.

Seven countries have withdrawn from the UN global migration pact over concerns about national sovereignty: Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the United States.

On December 2, 2017, the Trump administration announced that the U.S. Mission to the United Nations had informed the UN Secretary-General that the United States is ending its participation in the Global Compact on Migration because the compact is “inconsistent” with U.S. policies:

The New York Declaration contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with US immigration and refugee policies and the Trump Administration’s immigration principles. As a result, President (Donald) Trump determined that the United States would end its participation in the Compact process that aims to reach international consensus at the UN in 2018.

Parishioner in Albuquerque Pepper-Sprayed on Church Property for Talking about Pedophile Priest

A faithful member of a parish in New Mexico was pepper-sprayed in the face by a church employee on church property two Sundays ago – allegedly because he was discussing the Catholic clerical sexual abuse scandal.

After attending Mass at the St. Bernadette Shrine in Albuquerque on November 11, Reuben Ortiz told Church Militant that he was speaking with a man in his 30s who claimed he had been sexually abused by a Catholic priest.

Ortiz told the man about how he and his wife, Tania, had taken a retired priest into their home for seven months – only to discover to their horror that he had been accused of molesting dozens of boys in Iowa.

The Diocese of Sioux City had concealed Rev. Jerome Coyle's sexual misconduct for 32 years, the Associated Press reported last month. It was only after the AP inquired about him in late October of this year that the church publicly identified Coyle as an admitted pederast.

In 1986, Coyle reported his “history of sexual attraction to and contact with boys” to Sioux City’s bishop, revealing that he had victimized approximately 50 youngsters over a 20-year period while serving in several Iowa parishes , according to a private letter written in February by the diocese vicar general and obtained by the AP.

Coyle was stripped of his parish assignments in the 1980s but never defrocked.

The bishop to whom Coyle reported his abuse, Lawrence Soens, retired in 1998. A review board later found that Soens himself had abused students when he was a priest and parochial school principal.

As a member of the clergy, Soens was not a mandatory reporter — someone obligated to tell police about child abuse allegations — under Iowa law. But critics said he still should have called authorities, sought to have Coyle defrocked, alerted the public and asked victims to come forward. Soen’s whereabouts are unknown.

“We are Arabised!” – Only one of 103 new pupils at Berlin school speaks German at home

Headmaster Astrid-Sabine Busse (61) of a Berlin school is sounding the alarm, saying: “We are Arabised!”

Of the 103 first graders that came to her school in Berlin’s Neukölln suburb, only one speaks German at home. It is a result of working class Germans leaving the area, migrant family reunifications and tax measures.

“We are here at the front,” says headmaster Busse: “Because of a third migrant generation who import their brides from their former home country. Another parent who cannot speak German”, she says.

Busse says a lot of children lack basic needs and social skills: “Many children do not have their own bed, let alone a place to do homework. The big siblings play on the computer, watch TV. It takes a little child rest to process what they have learned. There is no daily structure. Even the meals have been broken off.”

According to the headmaster’s observations the problems are far reaching. Many children are not raised at all according to Busse.

That’s why the new students practice the ABC with them first: then the little ones learn things that were previously unknown to them, such as: When you meet someone, you greet them.

Busse says the situation is ‘completely unbearable’ and says “politics are only responsible for a few years. The school is always there. And the problems are obvious”.

Scientist unveils blueprint to save bees and enrich farmers…Urgent planting of wildflowers will attract pollinators and boost farmers’ food crops, expert to tell UN

The collapse in bee populations can be reversed if countries adopt a new farmer-friendly strategy, the architect of a new masterplan for pollinators will tell the UN biodiversity conference this week.

Stefanie Christmann of the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas will present the results of a new study that shows substantial gains in income and biodiversity from devoting a quarter of cropland to flowering economic crops such as spices, oil seeds, medicinal and forage plants.

The UN conference is already debating new guidelines on pollinators that will recommend reducing and gradually phasing out the use of existing pesticides, but Christmann’s research suggests this can be done without financial pain or a loss of production.

The need for a change is increasingly evident. More than 80% of food crops require pollination but the populations of insects that do most of this work have collapsed. In Germany, this fall is by up to 75% over the past 25 years. Puerto Rico has seen an even sharper decline. Numbers are not available in most countries, but almost all report an alarming decline.

Government responses have varied widely. Earlier this year, Brazil, one of the world’s biggest food exporters, went backwards when pro-agribusiness congressmen voted to lift restrictions on pesticides forbidden in other countries.

By contrast, the EU banned the world’s most widely used insecticides – known as neonicotinoids and many European countries are planting wildflowers to attract insects.

But this policy is expensive and brings little or no income to farmers. Christmann has spent the past five years working on a different approach, which she calls “farming with alternative pollinators” with field trials in Uzbekistan and Morocco.

The essence of the technique is to devote one in every four cultivation strips to flowering crops, such as oil seeds and spices. In addition, she provides pollinators with cheap nesting support, such as old wood and beaten soil that ground nesting bees can burrow into. Sunflowers were also planted nearby as wind shelters.

“There is a very low barrier so anyone in even the poorest country can do this. There is no equipment, no technology and only a small investment in seeds. It is very easy. You can demonstrate how to do it with pictures sent on a cellphone.”
