American killed in arrow attack after traveling to isolated Indian island
A U.S. citizen was killed in a bow-and-arrow attack by a protected island tribe in India that is isolated from the outside world.
After a failed attempt, John Allen Chau, 27, offered money to local fishermen to the Andaman islands in the Indian Ocean, after which he took a canoe to North Sentinel Island, where the tribe resides.
"He tried to reach the Sentinel island on Nov. 14 but could not make it. Two days later, he went well-prepared. He left the dingy midway and took a canoe all by himself to the island," sources told Agence France-Presse.
"He was attacked by arrows, but he continued walking,” the sources added. “The fishermen saw the tribals tying a rope around his neck and dragging his body.”
Reuters reports that Chau was a preacher and had indicated he was interested in ministering to the tribe, but it’s uncertain whether he had planned to do so when reaching the island. Reuters also reports Chau’s body has not yet been recovered, and the fishermen who assisted Chau have been arrested.
"The investigation in this matter is on," said senior police officer Deepak Yadav.

A U.S. judge has dismissed nationwide litigation over the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in which victims' families sought to hold the carrier, its insurer Allianz SE and Boeing Co liable for the still-unexplained disaster.
U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson in Washington ruled on Wednesday night that the wrongful death and product liability litigation, encompassing 40 lawsuits, did not belong in the United States.

On November 24 we mark a somber occasion, the 85th anniversary of Holodomor, when the brutal Soviet regime engineered and executed a catastrophic manmade famine and starved to death millions of innocent Ukrainians. As Wess Mitchell, our Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, made clear last week at an event in Washington, this was an atrocity. It was the result of a deliberate policy whereby Joseph Stalin seized Ukrainian land and crops with the explicit political goal of starving Ukraine as a people and a nation, to break their will, to cow them into submission, and to destroy their identity and national aspirations.
Today, once again, Ukrainians are dying as a result of cold-blooded policies directed by the Kremlin against the very fabric of Ukraine’s national existence. Russia seeks a Ukrainian vassal state, deprived of sovereignty, beholden to Moscow, and held captive within its sphere of influence. It wants to prevent Ukrainians from choosing their own future, but the Kremlin is again on the wrong side of history.
Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine has only solidified Ukrainians’ desire for a future free of Kremlin control and post-Soviet corruption. Russia’s aggression has bolstered Ukraine’s unity and pushed it further along the path to integration with Europe. Ukrainians have repeatedly shown they will not be beaten down or deterred from charting their own course. Mindful of the past, the United States stands with Ukraine and its people in pursuit of that brighter future.
