While a student at George Washington University, Abedin began working as an intern in the White House in 1996, assigned to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. From 1996 to 2008, she was an assistant editor of the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs.[20] For several years, she served as the back-up to Clinton's personal aide. She officially took over as Clinton’s aide and personal advisor during Clinton's successful 2000 U.S. Senate campaign in New York[5] and later worked as traveling chief of staff and "body woman" during Clinton's unsuccessful campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.[3][4] Writing in Vogue during the 2007 campaign, Rebecca Johnson called her "Hillary's secret weapon.” According to a number of Clinton associates, Abedin is also a trusted advisor to Clinton, particularly on the Middle East, and has become known for that expertise.[5] "She is a person of enormous intellect with in-depth knowledge on a number of issues—especially issues pertaining to the Middle East", said Senator John McCain.[5]
Abedin was also a key member of the approval process for Bill Clinton’s public speaking schedule during Hillary Clinton’s tenure at State. In one especially controversial example, ABC News discovered one email sent in June 2012 to Clinton State Department chief of staff Cheryl Mills from Amitabh Desai, a foreign policy director at the Clinton Foundation, passed on an invitation for a speaking engagement in Brazzaville, Congo. The dictators of Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo would both be attending – and required photos with Bill Clinton. Confirmed by Arab sources is that Huma Abedin has a brother who works at Oxford University named Hassan Abedin. Oxford, which has long been infiltrated by Islamists who founded the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS), has Huma's brother listed as a fellow and partner with several Muslim Brotherhood members on the Board – including al-Qaeda associate Omar Naseef and the notorious Muslim Brotherhood leader Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi. Both have been listed as OCIS trustees.
In 2009, Qaradawi's role within Oxford and the Muslim Brotherhood was championed by the notorious Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi of Al-Nahda – a Muslim Brotherhood affiliate now active in Tunisia. OCIS has even presented an award for great scholarly achievement to Brotherhood member Shaykh Abd Al-Fattah Abu Gudda, whose personal history goes back to the Brotherhood's founder, Hasan al-Banna.
