Head of Russian intelligence agency GRU dies
The head of Russia’s military intelligence agency GRU, blamed by western countries for a raft of recent attacks, has died after “a severe and prolonged illness”, the Kremlin has said.
Igor Korobov, whose agency is accused of an assassination attempt in the UK against former spy Sergei Skripal and efforts to meddle in the 2016 US election, died on Tuesday aged 62, the ministry said in a statement to local news agencies.
Korobov’s two-year tenure heading the agency saw it rise to international infamy and become a buzzword for Russia’s daring foreign espionage efforts and alleged attempts to influence other countries, which Moscow denies.
